I got a drop on and XPA-3 Gen 1 for $430, I am going to use it for a 2 channel system, anyone think its worth it for the price or should I just go with a BasX A-300?

I think the XPA-3 is nice. But for two channel the real sweet spot is XPA-2

I think you would be better off with the A-300....can you pass that info on the XPA-3 my way....hahaha.
I think the XPA-3 would be a nice step up from the BasX but it is kind of a waste getting a three channel for two channel...unless of course you blow one!

Right, so if you had a choice between an XPA-3 Gen 1 and a brand new A-300, you would roll with the XPA-3?

Seems like a reasonable price to me. Offer them $400 and see if they take it and will make you feel like you got a deal.

i would say absolutely get it, give it the sniff test first see if it smells funny. I sold mine for 750 but was barely used . Just becasue something is newer or different doesnt make it better, just different.

Depends on your speakers and room interactions, how loud you play, and much more. The XPA-3 will probably have no warranty left. No big deal for an amp. It should be good for another 10-20 years. Who knows for sure? I've had good luck with older amps, especially the Acurus line. I can't recall the last time I had an amp die.

I am using Tekton Pendragons in a smallish living room, the power output isnt really my concern, I know I can get away with very little power with these speakers. I am just looking for sound quality improvement. Currently I am using a Crown XTI-1002 and it just has no balls in the bass area, it does have DSP but its a bloody pain to use so I am looking to upgrade.

IMO for $430 I don't see any down side on buying it. Unless it is DOA you could always resell it for at least what you paid for it (most likely a little more) and buy the A-300 later.

Gen 1 amps used 32db gain, gen 2 is 29db gain IIRC. Nothing to get excited about. The 32db gain helps AVRs that might not have enough voltage supply to the preamp out jacks and the amp may not be able to produce full power if thats the case. I haven't heard anyone with problems driving the 32db amps using an AVR. IMO its a non sequitur.

I would go for the A300 and have a new amp with warranty, just my opinion of course.

In every case I would choose the Gen 1 overt the Gen 2. I think the control of the speaker drivers is better in Gen 1 amps and I hear no stress or strain no matter how loud I listen. With the Gen 2 I am much more leery about pushing them. They work great for home theater duty but for long term music playing Gen 1 hands down. Tim

An XPA power amp is always going to be step above a BasX power amp. Not saying that BasX amps are bad, that's silly, just that an XPA is better. A good power amp lasts a long time, decades even, so I'd always suggest buying the best one within the budget the first time round.
Cheers Gary

Curious. What speakers are you driving? Also sure an XPA-3 will work fine. What are your plans for the 3rd channel? I have to agree the XPA-2 is the sweet spot of stereo XPA life. The XPA-1 monos are off the chain good. No harm no foul if you go with an XPA-3 it is a great amplifier.

Going to just ignore the third channel, I just figured it would be cool to have an XPA amp for $400 and ignore a channel than spend $999 on a brand new XPA-2.
