It isn’t. There’s a 5.4 “beta” that has been distributed to a few of us who have had banding issues with HDR material sourced from the ATV4K. It has finally fixed “that” issue, but has introduced some other issues that have been mentioned in the last several posts. It’s not ready for prime time, but when it is, it will be the closest to “perfect” that we’ve yet seen.

The banding in my case with the ATV4K is quite diminished with v5.4, and now I have to look quite hard for it. Thus far, I'm not seeing it with any content on the Oppo UDP-203, but I'll keep looking for it with different movies. I have also discovered that when playing DTS-HD MA 5.1 sources the display shows "Reference Stereo" as the DSP mode when the 5.1 mode in the Input menu is set to "AUTO". The sound doesn't change so I'm thinking this is a Display error. Because DIRAC isn't visible in the "Speaker Preset" thus not available in the UI, the size(small/large), subwoofer choices and surround choices aren't available, though the DIRAC filters are active. Thus definitely some bugs that I believe will be easily fixed. I saw that during a preview but as soon the movie starts shows the right DSP mode. In my case I tested Hacksaw Ridge UHD and when selecting ATMOS, with Audio Mode set to AUTO, it shows Surround and plays Dolby THD 7.1

Agree with Doc that this is the closest to almost perfect firmware to date. Unfortunately it broke Dirac preset and also I get some random no video at start up which I found a workaround adding additional input commands and delays on a couple of activities on my Harmony Elite remote.

Seems odd a fix for banding would break other, seemingly unrelated, things. Hopefully they'll be a cleaned-up official release soon, though don't know what resources are like with the RMC-1 rollout underway. I'm not a programmer, but this one seems obvious, that they copied some code from the RMC-1 firmware, which will not have Dirac available out of the gate.

The Dirac Live part disabled from an RMC-1 pull was mentioned earlier by several of us. I was thinking more about the display and mode issues (the latter also appear to be display issues). But yah could all be part of a pull from the RMC-1...

Enrico: I still do not get video randomly (or so it seems) when starting with Comcast X1 settop as my source. Can you please tell me the exact startup sequence you are using on your logitech? (order of power up, extra delays on devices/activities, where you insert extra input commands). Thanks

I saw this using 5.3 with the last Blu-Ray I played, but it was just before I left town and didn’t have time to explore and report it. So I believe it might not be new to 5.4B.

Had the same problem yesterday. Played a BluRay that said 5.1 on the screen but, would only play Stereo and said no surrounds available on the remote when trying to make level adjustments. Not sure if there was a problem with that BluRay or the XMC-1. First time I have run into that issue

I have now also tested 5.4B for HDR banding with the Oppo 203 > XMC-1v3 > Sony 85x900F. First I play a specific HDR demo video stored on a USB Flash Drive pluged directly into my Sony TV, I see no banding. Then I plug the same drive into my Oppo 203 and on through the V3 board. Prior to 5.4 I would see banding in the sky and other locations in the file, after installing 5.4B I can no longer see banding. Using this video 5.4B appears to be a noticeable improvement in this regard, I haven’t been able to test for the Mac mini problem yet, as on my system it’s already hard to duplicate.

Definitely agree, as I reverted back to v5.3 after reporting the bugs I found. Though I have a mixture of the “firmware” file from v5.3 and the “HDMI” file from v5.4beta.

I want to thank all those who have give feedback to Emotiva, and to Emotiva staff, for working (and continuing to work) through all the problems.
This definitely gets my excited for the upcoming ATMOS/HDMI upgrade.

I really wish that Emotiva would stop using designations like 5.4b. Also, the confusing use of external versus internal Firmware Version Numbers is a problem. From a product management standpoint they should just use the same version numbers internally and externally. And, any time anything is changed and distributed outside the company — even if just a recompile — they should burn a new Version Number. It's not like they're expensive.

XMC-1 FIRMWARE UPDATESGoing forward you will find all official released firmware updates for the XMC-1
HERE:
You will currently find v5.3 (it's the latest release version). Firmware v 5.4 will be posted there when it's released (probably later today or tomorrow).
Some beta versions are "public betas" - and others are not.
Firmware v5.4b was a "closed beta version" - so it was only sent directly to certain individuals (which is why it wasn't posted).
So where are the downloads for 5.3 and 5.4b? The front page only goes up to 5.2

When you reverted to V5.3, did the update stop when updating the HDMI version and the XMC-1 asked to reboot? The update stopped at the HDMI file and kept on trying to access it on the USB stick while flashing on screen "HDMI Fail". At this point I simply shut the XMC-1 off by the rocker switch on back of the unit, pulled the USB, and turned the rocker switch back on. The power button on front turned amber and I started it up as usual.
