Hi,
Today I installed the new firmware 2.9.3 on the MC-700. Everything went well until I ran EmoQ Calibrate. The device has started to analyze the left front channel and has insisted on that channel again and again, without going on to analyze the rest of the channels. EmoQ Calibrate has therefore stopped working with this new firmware. Has anyone had the same thing happen to me?

Where is any information or update instructions for this firmware??

I think it works just like the previous firmware, except EmoQ Calibrate, which does not work properly in this new firmware.

Right, but what is fixed? Why update. Usually Emotiva provides a text file with that information.

They don't anymore. If you download the latest firmware from the official Emotiva website you will see that there is no text file with any information.

How helpful.

The new firmware makes EMOQ not work. This is to make owners of the MC-700 mad at their processor so they will go and buy one of the new processors that Emotiva will hopefully be selling soon.

The curious thing about this issue is that they release the new firmware and at the same time do not suggest the update. So, why do they release it?

I'll pass on it until Emotiva tells us what is in it and what it fixes. Silly approach to updates.

Yes, I've really been foolish to think that updates always help to improve, not to destroy as is the case here.

Yes, I've really been foolish to think that updates always help to improve, not to destroy as is the case here. I would first look for something obvious in your setup to make sure there's no issue with it (independent of FW)...all cables securely connected from pre/pro to amp to speaker, etc. Maybe even change cables to make sure there's not an issue with a cable. And, is there anything unusual about the speaker itself - where it's placed (something near it that impacts its sound dramatically that is whacking out the calibration?) or perhaps an issue with the speaker itself? If you move that speaker to the opposite side - is there suddenly an issue w/calibrating that side now? If so, maybe something has gone wrong inside it since you last ran the calibration. Then I would call Emotiva tomorrow to get their advice. They might suggest a re-install of the FW...perhaps something with wrong the install itself (as opposed to the actual code in the FW). Good luck, Mark

I'm going to try to disconnect and re-connect the cables, in case there is any problem related to this. But all the channels work... without EmoQ.

No, the cables are not the reason Emo_Q does not work.

I have had 2.9.3 installed for several months. The EMO-Q works fine with this new version. I would try to re-download a new copy of the 2.9.3 and re-flash the MC.

The problem was solved by installing the previous version, 2.9.2. Perhaps the new firmware and the amplifier, a Nuforce MCA-18, were incompatible.

I would bet you just had a bad flash of the new FW. The calibration system and FW have no idea what amp you have, and I cannot imagine any "incompatibility" Mark

I was sort of thinking that too...
However....
The firmware is peripherally involved in how EmoQ interprets some information...
And EmoQ does rely on analysis of the waveforms picked up by the microphone to detect things like speaker distances. Sometimes, if you have dipole speakers, or unusual room acoustics, EmoQ can't "lock onto" the waveform properly, and becomes confused. Therefore, it's possible that some slight difference in how the firmware handles the situation might cause a "borderline" situation to go "one way or the other".
I should also note that the NuForce Amp is a Class-D design... And we have occasionally seen cases where EmoQ had trouble with Class-D amplifiers. (Because of how they work, and especially the output reconstruction filters, some Class-D amps create unusual delays and phase shifts in the audio signal, a few of which seem to confuse EmoQ.)

The world today has become very complex... and processors have to work with a huge variety of other equipment. We quite often see issues that only affect customers who have a very specific combination of other equipment - or who use certain specific features. As a result, we often release firmware updates that fix actual bugs that only affect a few customers. Other times, we may release updates that improve stability. (That's a fancy way of saying that, while it doesn't fix any particular known problems, it may make problems a little less likely to occur in general.)
After a firmware update is thoroughly tested, we release it as an update, and start loading it onto new units that are manufactured. However, unlike some other manufacturers, we do not often add significant new features in firmware updates. And, to be quite honest, firmware updates rarely affect sound quality (which is usually more a matter of hardware design).
Therefore, we generally do NOT suggest that "everyone always download and install the latest update - even if their unit is working fine".
You may OCCASIONALLY see a situation where we absolutely recommend that all users apply a specific update that addresses a common problem or adds a significant feature - but not often. (In fact, in general, we don't specifically suggest that you even check for updates unless you're experiencing some sort of issue that you're hoping to resolve.)
The curious thing about this issue is that they release the new firmware and at the same time do not suggest the update. So, why do they release it?

Would it be likely that a class D amp would create an issue for 1 channel yet not another? I would think not. In any case, as a Emotiva rep, would you reco the user try a fresh re-flash of FW? Mark
