Does your XMC-1 have the V3 upgrade? My mini switched fine before I had it altered. No upgrade. Don’t have a 4K TV yet. Russ If I had known then what I know now............

Great topic, DYohn! This topic can be overwhelmingly confusing, even for people who are computer savvy...so many buzz words get used and most that have learned the systems talk in terms of product names not what the product does. I've honestly read things all over the web that sound like this: "well, to stream my music, I use a Snarfy Plus to a Figgle Bot via Volcano using DLNA on my WarpSpeed 2000 that runs Vanilla Deluxe. It worked great once I gnarfled the garthog" And, I'm left going "huh"? Once I learned enough of the lingo, I figured out what to do, but it was not easy. I recently visited chicagorspec and got to listen to his excellent new system updates (very nice, but topic for different thread!). Among other changes, he got a Small Green Computer Sonictransporter i7 as his music server and a Sonore Signature Rendu SE as his Roon endpoint. A comment he made that relates to the OP struck me...he said he saw a video from Andrew Gillis that showed "you just plug them in, run an internet cable to here, and another from here to there, connect the Rendu to a USB DAC, and there you go". Very easy...and...it sounds GREAT. I think the biggest opportunity for the makers of gear like this is "how to communicate simply what the device is/does and how to set it up". As of now, most talk in gibberish, and that prevents entry from us "common folks" Mark

Yes. All Apple devices are now endpoints. So what would be your server? That is what my article is about. In my setup a Mac mini with external USB hard drive. Russ So then you'd have no need for what I'm discussing, unless you wished to upgrade.

klinemj Mark, you could not be more right. This whole area was started by computer geeks and geek-speak runs rampant. Simplification is the way to go. Andrew Gillis at SGC is really great and great to work with. I run his Vortexbox software with Roon instead of Logitech Media Server on a PC I built for the purpose, and it is fantastic. The Sonicorbiter OS they offer on their products is even better.

Hmmm...maybe I could offer them my services! Mark

Agreed with the above. I’ve finally gotten knowledgeable enough, with a fair bit of help from klinemj, to figure out how to link together my router to a server to a player to my DAC, but it was like wandering in the dark there for a while, as I am far from a computer/networking expert. Now that I’ve got everything communicating via sonicorbiter and Roon, it sounds very good, and having so much music just a touch of a tablet away has somewhat increased my listening time, but vastly increased my listening enjoyment. I’ve introduced more new artists and music to my listening room in the last three months than I had in the previous ten years.

Don't understand your response so I'll restate my posting intention in a better way. An excellent, inexpensive way to network audio requiring little if any computer knowledge is as follows: 1- Mac mini, starts at $499 2- an external USB hard drive to store your music 3- a subscription to roon 4- plug mini USB output to DAC USB input Load roon server on the mini, point to the location of the music files. roon then finds your (roon endpoint) DAC. DONE; could not be any simpler. If your computer and DAC are remotely separated, then mini ethernet output to router, ethernet cable from router to Apple TV (to keep it inexpensive), Apple TV output to DAC. DONE Russ

Spend $200 for a Shitt Etr in situation 1, or in situation 2, replace the ATV with a micro Rendu or SoTM-200 for $200 more. Still just as easy with “audiophile” sound.
