I don't own any video or audio CD's, DVD's. But I'd like to get a player so I can play rental blueray movies. I won't be using any of the apps.
1) Should I worry-about/wait for 4k? Realistically will there ever be a lot of rental 4k disks? I have a 4k TV and 4k XMC-1.
2) I want better than s $25 grocery store generic player. But I don't want a $5,000 videofoolery one either.
3) I need two HMDI outputs, video for the TV Screen, the audio for XMC-1.
4) Every player I've ever owned has been agonizingly slow. Long wait for a response to disk insertion and spinup. Deathly slow response to an annoying list of choices you have to wade thru, before you get to the movie. I just want to shove the disk in and start watching!
5) An Amazon link would insure I'm looking at the right model.
6) If there are compatibility issues, my TV is a Samsung.
7) I just want to play rental blueray movies.
Sincerely, /b

Given you current wants... I'd grab an OPPO-103D. It's an excellent player and will out preform your current needs.

Redbox has started renting 4K Blu-rays in select markets, I’m hoping someday soon they expand, and I think they will, just don’t know when. I can’t imagine owning a 4K TV and not being able to play a 4K disk to its best ability. I have an Oppo 203, but it’s discontinued and too expensive for your needs. I think Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, and LG make 4K players in the $200-$300 range that would meet your needs, others would better recommend a specific model.

I would go with the Samsung UHD8500. It will even automatically calibrate settings to your Samsung 4k tv. I have the 2015 model which is the same except it also does 3D. The new 217 model does not do 3D (so I read). The 2017 model goes for $217 unless you want to take a chance on a reconditioned one.

The 103d is a much better player then any of the above suggestions minus the 203, it's out of your price range. It will do 3d and upscale you rentals to 4k. I'm positive it'll do a better job of it then your TV too. It's a very reliable, fast player that will play anything you throw at it minus 4k discs. The Debeer processing will deliver wonderful depth to the image also. I have the 203 4k player and while I like the player if I were in your shoes I'd give it a little more time to let things like HDR, Dolby Vision and WCG become a little more developed. All of these are issues the the current crop of 4k players can't do well. Some better then others but none can do right. Just my $.02

Don't go backward in technology Most new players are backward compatible Who knows, you may replace your tv and then find out the older BP player is out of date Problems tend to compound as time goes by The OPPO is discontinued, and Darbee processing is only good for 1080P as the company seems to be dragging its feet in up to date products. Also, there is an advantage to have the apps in the player instead of the tv Immersive codecs are more likely to work as most ARC does not.

Sincerely, /b Been buying Sony and Samsung players for years with good results. Technology changes too much to get crazy in this department. Case in point, my UHPH1 (Sony) was replaced by 4K less than 6 months after buying. That being said, I have ultra HD upconversion, which is all I care about for now. Both units in my system can separate audio/ video, although I don’t use the feature. Bill

I have a Sony X800 which does everything I need, including playing SACD’s, for a very reasonable price. It has both good video and audio and it works perfectly with the XMC-1, so although it has dual HDMI outs I don’t need to use them. I back to backed it with an Oppo 203 and I couldn’t see or hear any difference. Plus as Bill pointed out, I won’t feel guilty about replacing it whenever it needs replacing due to being technically out of date. My Samsung TV doesn’t do Dolby Vision, so it’s abscence didn’t concern me.
Cheers Gary

There are many possibilities. Oppo Sony and Panasonic are my top heavy hitters. Then Samsung and LG.
There are test data out and about and you can learn more. A 103 as mentioned here would be my first choice, then on from there. The 203 will substantially more since they and the 205, are done for good as is the 103 and 105.
I wish Oppo didn't leave the industry but they saw a good thing coming to an end. It makes much harder to be excited about a blue ray player with them gone.

Save yourself the hassles and get the matching Samsung 4k player. Guarantied to work flawlessly with your 4k Samsung display. (if not you know who to complain to. )

If this is just for rental movies and if you are not doing HDMI Switching through a Home Theater Receiver - then, I would suggest getting the same brand of Blue-Ray player as your TV like Bootman said. This "keeps almost everything easy" - you can probably run the whole system via ONE remote, and when you turn-on the BR it will probably automatically switch the TV for BR viewing.
I know that there are universal settings for most systems, and nearly everything CAN be made to work with (almost) everything else. However, setting-up such stuff can get complex (as in frustrating). My Sony Network Blue Ray was "Plug-And Play" and nearly brainless, and the menus are structured along the same format for BOTH devices which makes live a bit easier.
If you run through a Home Theater Receiver from a "big-brand" - then the next most obvious options would be to match THAT brand instead of the TV.

It's a good question. Honestly nowadays any blu ray player will be just fine. Just don't use apps on them as they are very slow. If budget is an issue I'd just go with blu ray. But if you are okay with spending a bit more, I think I would invest in to a 4k unit. I also wouldn't bother with all these higher end units. No point really imo . Just make sure you get one that does HDMI 2.0b and hopefully Dolby Vision.

I need to remove my suggestion for the Oppo 103. After looking on Ebay for pricing on a good used one...boy have all things Oppo shot WAY up in price.
If you decide to get a player from Sony, Panasonic, LG or Sammy.. I'd definitely get the extended warranty. Also remember that they come out with new players every year at a minimum so don't expect much in the way of support or Firmware updates down the road.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions, you've offered some excellent advice. I've come to a couple of decisions.
1) I've decided to buy a Samsung player, hoping for synergy with my Samsung TV.
2) I've invested a lot of money for a 4k UHD system, which is kinda pointless without a 4k UHD source. So I'm going to invest in the newest, best, upscaling, 4k UHD player I can afford, to give me that source.
So, unless someone has a better Idea, I buying the SAMSUNG M9700 UHD Dual HDMI - 2K/4K - Region Free Blu Ray Disc DVD Player. ~us$330.
Sincerely /b

I also saw this post in the XMC thread over at AVS that might be of interest with other non-dual output devices. ... The OPPO was a no brainer, it has an audio only HDMI output as well as the standard HDMI 2.0 HDCP 2.2 output. So the full signal goes to the C7 and the audio only goes to the XMC-1. For the other two, I bought two of these: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FQDC8XVIt splits the HDMI audio out and sends it to the XMC-1. HDMI audio is important. I could have just used the optical out on the C7, but it doesn't support DD+ and also presents possible sound delay issues. They work like a charm. Apple TV 4k sends Dolby Vision fine to the C7. Genie 4k Mini sends HLG HDR fine to the C7
