How would you rate sq of headphone out of pt-100? I really want the tuner in the pt-100 but if the headphone out is just ok I will have to reconsider. alternatively: could I run the pt-100 out to another amp? Last, any thoughts on tuner reception of pt-100? Thanks

It depends on what headphones you use. If you use high impedance headphones (above 200 ohms) or electrostatic/planar headphones you are going to need a beefy amp. But for instance these headphones which use regular drivers and are 48 ohms require very little power for them - the ath m50x

Look you'll get sound out of pretty much anything with the HD6xx even an iphone. But for best results you want to try more powerful amplification. Of course that costs $$ The HD6xx is a remarkably good headphones but the sound won't be as good as it can be. But it won't sound bad with the PT-100.

Regardless of headphones in play, a dedicated headphone amplifier is always the way to go. They don't need to be a sell your soul to get one, but they can be. Good ones all over the place. High impedance Senns and Beyer Dynamics need a good swift kick....well current, they need current. Voltage is nice too. Emotiva has the secret sauce BAS-X a100. The Headphone amplifier disguised as a speaker amplifier. It lets you have it your way. Or if bucks are tight, get the Schiit Audio Magni 3. $99.00 of stupid good value. Any way slice and dice it most component headphone stages are not their highlight. But hey! Your mileage may vary. Your cans, your ears.

There are plenty of HPs that want/need more power, some need much more power and yet a few that need a crazy amount of power. The HP 6XX doesn’t require an expensive amp to drive them properly, the PT-100 will do a nice job. To get the fullest potential, like garbulky wants, a dedicated amp would be nice. Yes, the chain will always be reflected in the headphones.
