I can't enjoy jazz with a guitar in the mix. I kinda find an electric guitar out of place since everything else is unplugged. I'm talking about hard bop, or classic jazz.. not fusion or more modern styles.
I wondered if it's because it's an electric guitar that makes it sound so out of place, but I think even if an acoustic guitar was used, I'd dislike it as well.
Anyone else agree? Maybe its just me.

Disagree, but I'm not talking about 'smooth jazz,' I'm talking about real jazz.
Django Reinhardt was one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time.

It has to be Jazz in the right mood / style - but a few that I like here & there are:
-George Benson -Pat Metheny -Larry Carlton (I believe he recorded on a Steely Dan album or two)
Most of the "Old School" Jazz seemed to seldom incorporate guitar - at least not in a featured / soloist role...

I like jazz guitar quite a lot.
Wes Montgomery, John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny and others.
However, I CANNOT handle duo albums. Any duo, bass and piano, bass and guitar, piano and sax - Grates at me.
Oh, and violin jazz - can't handle it.

You will need to site specific recordings/examples to have any kind of a discussion like this....especially when you’re saying things like every thing else is unplugged. Bill

405x5 It's a general taste thing for me versus specific recordings.

Oh, please do research and listen to Phillip Catherine, Joe Pass, Bobby Broom, Tal Farlow, Billy Bauer, Anthony Wilson, Russell Malone, Ed Bickert, Jim Hall, Bill Frisell, Julian Lage, Charlie Christian, Kenny Burrell, and so many others before you conclude this.
Guitar in jazz is well established since the '40s.
To learn more, google jazzguitar.be for a whole new world for many.
Best,

Kenny Burrell Midnight Blue.. highly recommended by everyone .. but I couldn't enjoy it. The electric guitar just hits me the wrong way. What I mean by unplugged, is when you have sax, piano, upright bass, trumpet, and then an electric guitar. Sounds just odd.. I can't get past it. I do love guitar though.. electric or not.. in rock, folk, etc. Just not in classic Jazz. Ive listened to quite a few albums featuring a guitat in my first year of listening to Jazz.. just can't enjoy it. Was listening to a Hank Mobley album.. Grant Green was playing guitar.. didn't like the guitar. Loved the music besides that. Dug up other Mobley albums without guitar and much preferred them. Lee Morgan.. Search For a New Land.. really like this album but the guitar playing by Grant Green turns me off. And I've tried Wes Montgomery stuff but disliked as well. Now, I don't seem to mind it when in Fusion format. George Benson I do like. Maybe it's more to do with one instrument being electrical and the rest not.. who knows.

I've probably listened to a few dozen albums if not more. I love hard bop the most. I love the sounds of sax and trumpet. So, in my quest to learn jazz, I've hit a stumbling block and it's the electric guitar. I just find the sound odd with the rest of the instruments. A few months ago if someone told me I'd be a jazz fan, I'd have thought they were nuts. So I've come a long way... Maybe later the guitar will hit me right. .. First time I heard Eric Dolphy (Out to Lunch) I didn't make it past 2 minutes. At some point, it hit me and I'm listening to more and more of his stuff.. and replaying Out to Lunch more and more. Maybe at some point the guitar in a jazz setting will hit me correctly

Man, I love Steely Dan.. I'll try to figure out where Larry Carlton plays. I've seen Stelly Dan classified as Jazz Rock (or something similar) and I definitely dont have an issue with guitar in this genre. Steely Dan is one of my favorites from my high school days.

If you take the time to read the list of Regular and Guest Artists appearing on nearly ANY Steely Dan Album - you'll find a virtual "whos who" of Session & Jazz artists. They said that BOTH Donald Fagan and Walter Becker were EXTREMELY picky about the final mix used on the album as well.

Okay, so you’re in that subjective process of discovery and in time you’ll get a better handle on what you like. The unplugged thing is complex when it comes to jazz guitar vs other instruments. I played drums for years both professionally and just for the joy, with just about every form of guitar imaginable and in all manner of environments. Acoustic guitar is tough without amplification, that’s for sure. Drums Un amplified are acoustic also, but kill the guitar without a mix. Bill

Bill That makes sense.. and I'm not trying to trash these talented musicians, I'm learning and figuring out what I like and don't like. .. The jazz albums I dont listen to a second time usually have guitar... So trying to understand why. My initial reason was maybe it was because it was the only amplified instrument? Hard to pinpoint. There's a lot a jazz guitar fans here, so understand I'm hoping this is not offensive to anyone, just my experience with jazz music so far.
