I just got a 4K TV and I'm trying to decide if I should save some more for a XMC-1 or grab a Marantz SR7012 for half the price of the XMC-1. Marantz-SR7012 on saleThe price gap widens when I add my 13% contribution to my provincial and federal governments. Third option is to wait for creimes to sell his XMC-1 as he'll price it in C$.

Well that's a tough question. First of all do you have external amps? If you do not you will have to add that to the cost of your purchase on the XMC-1. I previously had the SR7009, and I can tell you the jump to the AV8802A pre/pro was huge, and I think some/many people find the AV8802A and the XMC-1 to be at least somewhat on par. (Many would say the XMC-1 is better, but I think they are close).
Now here is what you have to ask your self? 1) Do you want an Atmos setup? If yes then as of today the XMC-1 is not a viable option although it may/will be in the future. 2) Do you like the extra apps on the SR7012? Most people on this board don't care for them, but some do. 3) It looks like the XMC-1 has got most of the 4k stuff working, but there are still some issues here and there. The SR7012 will be solid from the beginning.
All that being said the XMC-1 will from an audio standpoint (assuming external amps) leaps and bounds better than the SR7012

I went from an SR6010 to an XMC-1 - and it was not a small difference in sound quality improvement, even without Dirac.

I’d go with option 3. We both know it’ll be within the next 6 months that chad posts his xmc. And then pisses and moans about it for another 2 years. (Poke poke jab jab). Xmc is definitely a nicer sounding machine. Or on a side note I got a buddy who’s selling his 7010. MINT and I mean Friggin mint. Condition. Or.... I saw an Avm60 posted on cam for 2250... it’s a steal at that price.

If the Marantz SR7012 sounds anything like a AV7702 then steer clear, just my opinion of course but for 2ch music I especially recommend the XMC-1, or like emofrmcgy posted an Anthem AVM60 would be great as well, I would go used and save a ton of money. I had Marantz. Now an XMC1. Not even close I'll give a pass because the OP asked about a specific model Marantz, and you went completely generic. But man dude, how many times do I need call you out on this subject? What are we up to now, 50? Quit dissing all Marantz as one product and I'll stop calling you out. You seem like a really nice guy but on this topic you are, well...geez. The XMC-1 is NOT perfect. Emotiva is far from it, as is the RMC-1 proving yet again.

Ok, I’ll bite. I’ve had receivers from Pioneer Elite, Yamaha, and Denon. No Marantz. They all did what they said they would do with very few, if no glitches. Having said that, the XMC-1 is the best sounding av unit I have ever owned. It’s also the most exciting. I can come here, report an issue, and the company will actually respond and do something about it. That’s huge for me. I have never received that kind of service from the others.

I know that my question was loaded and encouraged responses from all angles and your responses don't disappoint.
Atmos, Dolby Vision, HDR,HLG are main requirements with sound quality for music as secondary. Amp section will probably power the rear surrounds instead of the UPA-700. I mostly use my headphones, Mac Mini and Schiit combo for 2 channel but I also have the USP-1 for vinyl and CD via the Oppo.
My UMC has been solid for the past 8.5 years though a firmware upgrade early in its life did scare me as I had to do it a few times before the update completed. I didn't upgrade to the latest FW for fear that I may brick it.
The AVM60 on CAM is an interesting avenue and good price and I have seen some reasonably priced XMC-1 on CAM. I'll check out a couple of local AV stores to see if any can demo a Marantz. One close to me is more of a Denon and Yamaha shop.
I think i'll pass on the SR7012 for the time being.
Do I regret selling my upgrade card for C$400 a few years ago? Maybe just a bit.
Thanks y'all.

I've been told the 8000 series of Marantz are much better compared to the AV7702 I owned, still the 7702 new was a $2500 processor so for me that is no excuse saying oh well I should have to spend much more to get a unit that actually sounds good for 2ch reproduction is absurd, especially given my older Sherbourn PT-7020C4 bested the Marantz and not by a small margin, for movies it wasn't that far off but I need my system to sound good for both and so far the Anthem MRX310 and XMC-1 have done that for me. I'm of course just speaking from what I have heard in my room with my ears. For me if a pre/pro can't shine with 2ch music it doesn't belong in my system.
The XMC-1 with Dirac really leveled out the frequency response in my room(which is what it's supposed to do) but it didn't make the music sound dull and lifeless like the Marantz did, again this all subjective but I'm being honest in what I found in my system between the different pre/pro's I have used, no I haven't owned a 8802, 8805 or Macintosh etc etc or will ever own a RMC-1 as they are just out of my ability to afford so I can't comment on those.
Is there anywhere in Ottawa you can have a listen to an Anthem AVM60 ??
Cheers, Chad

Signature AVU may still carry Anthems. I got an Anthem amp early 2000s before I discovered Emo. I sold the MCA for UPAs.
I'll check them out tomorrow.
BTW, your items on sale are a couple of years late for my basement which is now run by the SR-120. But maybe I can sell the Sherbourn to the member who collects them and try out your Anthem.:-)

I would buy a machine that has the features I need. NOT a machine that has the promise of having those features. If all you needed was 7.1 it would be a no brainer.
