Vortexbox has been my centralize music server for the last few years, it's base OS is Fedora 23 server. I don't like Logitech Squeezebox GUI. (have not tried Orange Squeeze). Some files have just disappeared & others are "unknown". Bliss is the file look-up service but after 25 file queries, they want $75 for continued use. (lol) I have no clue how to add Musicbrainz to Vortexbox. I know Ubuntu Linux somewhat, but known nothing of Fedora terminal.
I'm looking at other music server systems (headless)- newer, more flexible, easier to use. I use my Android to operate. I tried to use Daphile (again Fedora), but I kept doing something wrong & would not work for me. I would like something that reads fat32 data base files- easy to manage. I prefer the OS on one disk and the files on another disk or partition. I'm considering Amahi. It is older design on Fedora 27 server OS but does look interesting. Just started installing & trying to learn it. Addon apps seem to be aplenty.
Want some suggestions for a Server OS to load on my Dell Optiplex pc. I would like a system I can use -something like Subsonic, Spotify, Clementine- as a music file manager, I can load onto a Linux or Windows pc. I do not want Kodi, have not tried Plex or Emby. I have no desire to go Apple because I use FLAC.
Is anyone using Amahi? What are your opinions, suggestions?
I'll even consider a pay-for app

I was in this position recently.
I ended up just buying a cheap NAS to serve up the files. Asustor, Qnap or Synology all could have a good inexpensive solution.
I am running MinimServer for my audio server on the NAS.
After I did that I found a linux distribution called XPENOLOGY. Its a bit difficult to install but turns your hardware into a Synology NAS. I am testing this and it works.
I looked at Amahi, tried FreeNAS and Nas4Free.
I really wanted to run Minimserver so it was not going to happen on those other Distributions.

I tried out amahi. I didn’t like that it needs to be the central hub for your network. I wanted something that would integrate with my network not need to take it over. I ended up using openmediavault and am SUPER happy with it. I’ll play with my clementine installation when I get home to see how the two mesh.

I need to re-read about that. emofrmcgy, I did look at mediavault appliance once, but I have 3 good pc's I want to used. Music streaming is so low power usage, silly not to convert one of them. I read yrs ago mediavault OS is out there, but one needs to know terminal commands to make it work on your particular pc.

It’s all a GUI nowadays. I was using dietpi previously but could never get my vnc software to work right. And I didn’t want to have a monitor connected. I tried fedora and Ubuntu servers via cockpit and couldn’t get my samba shares or nfc to work correctly. I tried freenas and nas4free but they needed to format my drives before it would recognize them. And yeah amahi wants to ba able to assign all network settings. Not just integrate into it. Plus most of the plugins are paid apps. Just my experience with it.

Here's my next stupid question- Daphile, Volumio, Sockso & Vortexbox all claim to be high quality audio dedicated servers. What makes them better than say Xpenology, The way I see it, it's the end DAC that does all the work. My clients will be Emotiva, Denon & Integra- all good DACs When I read forums, it seems many people are using usb DACs to analogue amplification.
I have never used Volumio, Sockso, so I'm gonna experiment with Volumio tonight. (upgraded since I first looked at it)

So using Openmediavault as network storage/server on a pc mounted in my equipment rack and clementine on my main pc running elementary os. Works perfectly, just as though the files were on a local drive. I tried volumio as well, wasn't super fond of having ANOTHER device but it was pretty slick and served it's purpose very well.

emofrmcgy- I like the fact that Openmediavault is Debian & not Red Hat looks like it could satisfies some "wants". I'll give it a try. Thx.
wilburthegoose- Thx, those machines are nice. I do not want to go down the road of proprietary products. I have $4000+ of boat anchors- D&M Escient music servers sitting on a shelf because they went out of business. Never again. I live by the rule of: use what you have, to get what you need, to get what you want. Besides. I like DIY, keeps me learning.
While looking at different options for an OS, I have to laugh at some of the music server builds with Intel i7, 4 core, 16g ram- ridiculous (Hemi in a Beetle). Some of the better server configs are Raspberry Pi- simple. cheap. The XMC doesn't even use a 500 Mhz cpu.

Have you looked into unraid at all? unraid.net/unraid.net/pricingI was running vortexbox before this and I havent't looked back. Love that you can add any size drive, run VMs, dockers, etc.

We have no need for raid servers. I just want to run a keep it simple music server on low tech pc's. But thanks for the suggestion.
