If only one could get J-Roonriver! LOL I still used jRiver for rips. I don't mind not having an all in one ripper/streaming software. I kept the old jRiver 18 and got my $ back for the upgrade to 24 (that didn't deliver what it promised...). Mark

There's MUCH to like about Roon, but I'm rapidly finding out that there's much to DISLIKE as well (especially of you're a Mac user). What used to be a slam-dunk when using jRiver is an absolute NIGHTMARE in Roon. Disk ripping is the prime example. In jRiver, this was a one-step process. Put the disc in the drive and select import. JRiver would select the right album name, track names, and cover art from online, create the folder and index it, rip to the format of your choice, and you were ready to go. Roon, on the other hand: Has no built-in ripper Requires an external ripping program (the Mac selection is slim) Requires manual indexing of the album location on the library disc Requires YOU to correct any errors in the metadata Requires YOU to find & associate the correct album artwork Is convoluted and SLOW at every step In short, what used to be a three to five minute process is now about 30 minutes per disc. This doesn't merely suck, it SUUUUUUUUCKS! Even if I had a GOOD Mac ripping program (haven't found one yet except for jRiver's), the multi-step import process would still throw me off Roon. And although Roon may be a far superior streaming source to jRiver, its convenience features are conspicuous only in their absence. So having paid for it, I'll use Roon for the year that I've paid for, but the likelihood of my renewing it after the first year is increasingly slim. What a PITA! Boom- an extremely poor representation of rOON. Rip with iTunes (error correction ON), turn on rOON, done. Perfect metadata (in rOON) 99% of the time. Russ

Also, if you use iTunes, don't forget to set the "gapless" mode.

I’m using a Windows 10 PC with 32gb of memory, an SSD, and a quad core i5. Asked Roon staff if a nucleus would make any difference, and they said no.

As I understand it, when you import a CD in iTunes, you can set/unset "gapless mode". For instance, if you import Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon in non-gapless mode, iTunes will create a "gap" between the resultant adjacent Digital Audio Tracks leading to interruptions in the subsequent album play. It's really an amazingly bad idea that should never have been a default selection and every engineer associated with this iTunes "feature" should just be shot. What's on the CD should be what's RIP'ed. Period. End of sentence. Oh well, idiot engineers (and I'm one of those idiots.) Casey

wilburthegoose Was it you who purchased or use a bulk CD ripper like dBpoweramp Batch Ripper? Apologies if I am incorrect.

Yep - The batch ripper was actually free, IIRC.
It controlled an ancient Sony VGP-XL1B - this machine was made to work with Windows Media Center, and would allow the user to play DVDs via WMC. But it also can be controlled from Windows and used for bulk ripping of CDs.
The cost was actually to pull metadata. The providers like GD3 charge if you're looking up metadata on such a high number of CDs.

It is done automatically.

Ah, thanks for the update DYohn. My friend does all the RIP'ing and I remember him complaining years ago about that now-removed "feature". Casey
