Sonore announce their newest "rendu" iteration : the "Opticalrendu" This is a write-up from the "Opticalrendu" thread >> link << on the Audiophile Style site (also formerly known as the ComputerAudiophile site): "The opticalRendu utilizes an SFP fiber optic transceiver at it's input to provide 100% galvanic isolation from the network and USB-audio output. The opticalRendu has linear power regulation, CPU circuit design with femto clocking, USB circuit design with femto clocking, and a network circuit design with femto clocking. This unit utilizes SonicOrbiter for it's operating system so you already know how to use it. If you are interested in this product please send an email to sonorejr@gmail.com with subject "opticalRendu" *************************** Further along in the same thread, John Swenson, who allegedly designed the Opticalrendu module board, explains a little bit what is "new" in it >> link <<: ******************** "Let me try and address some of these questions without giving away too much. In the ultraRendu the Ethernet port from the iMX6 is connected to an Ethernet PHY, which talks to a very high quality Ethernet jack with built in magnetics. The PHY is directly connected to the "outside world" which leaves it somewhat susceptible to the signal integrity of whatever is connected to it. In the opticalRendu I re-designed the Ethernet circuit. I'm not at liberty to discuss the details of this circuit. What I can say is that this circuit uses a ton of very high quality voltage regulation and very low phase noise clocking. The result is that the processor is fed a signal that is cleaner than any external Ethernet connection you can buy today. This circuit is the primary new addition to the opticalRendu and is where the additional oscillator is used. Using an optical network connection provides a remarkable synergy with this circuit allowing it to produce such a clean output to the CPU. As has been mentioned other parts of the opticalRendu have been significantly improved as well. That's as much as I can say right now. John S." ****************** As far as I know, any further "intel " about this new release is still buried in Sonore's R & D mystery playbook, and they're still acting all "cloak and dagger" about it.

This is playing to a new neuroses with that CA community. They claim that using a fiber ethernet cable improves audio performance.
Not sure I would invest in this fad.

I wonder why this would be developed as most consumer switches don't have SFP type connections. On a good note, I have 2 SFP and 2 SFP+ ports on my switch, so if anyone wants to send me one, I don't mind trying it out.

Agreed. I wouldn't pay or buy hardware to try it..

I'm really surprised they did this since optical is to me the worse performing version of S/PDIF.

Oh man.
This makes so much sense to me as we move away from using Mac/Wndows computers for DAC connections via USB.

I'll wait for the end-user reviews first, and see how actually superior they are, in comparison to the ultra/signature versions.

Interesting...would love to hear it! Mark Certainly my first thought.
I'm still "dialing in" my Signature SE. Replacing the cheapy USB to micro USB cable was a big help. The Wavelet is a killer DAC/preamp but the mfr provided USB cable is a spaghetti strand with cheap connector ends.
I'm finding that cleaning up the signal path (removing noise) makes a huge difference in sound quality. So naturally I wonder if the optical is a better option.
I also wonder if the Signature SE would benefit from an external power supply but there is only a standard IEC connector so it's a no go.

And yet another one of us has found that there's room for improvement on digital! On the Signature SE, I think I read that it's the ultrarendu with their best power supply coupled with it. I'm sure Andrew would confirm if it is. But, if that's what it is, that might be the answer to your power supply question. Mark

I bought that one because it was their flagship model. Always hated buying mid ship and then taking a hit on the sale to step up to the next level.
They do sell upgraded power cords but I already have a Nordost cord I'm using and works just fine. Scott

The opticalRendu is now shipping, with all its system optique accessories: You can either get the optical Rendu set up in separates, or get sonore's latest iteration of the Signature Rendu SE, which incorporates the Optical Rendu, the power supply, and other bells and whistles...
