First? If you LIKE them? No reason Not ot keep 'em, even if in secondary duty in the bedroom or perhaps garage?
As for DavidR? You're right....But it's not 'both', but IMO, one or the other. Broken thru abuse or it broke due to defect. Seems Def Tech wrote the first one off to some kind of defect. Sounds like a nice company which I suspect will get over THAT kind of behavior or look more closely at failures......to ascribe root cause. Under those conditions? I'd be tempted to replace BOTH the L and R of whatever driver failed..... IMO, they were clearly beaten up pretty good.
I 'broke' my Magnepan MG-1, which at the time were a solid 20 +years old. I just abusd 'em with over 200 watts per speaker, played at Ear Shattering levels. Just think of it as 'Pay To Play'.......
I'd heartily recommend that Gus go have a listen to the Cerwin Vega speaker I linked. Even stereophile liked it AND I rather doubt you can easily break it. It is VERY sensitive which if true means a good 50 watts will get you evicted from the STATE in which you live. At around the 200 watt level, you should begin feeling physical discomfort followed by a Coma. Great Party Speaker.

I really love how the SM55s sound, no matter where I stand, I like to play loud but don't get me wrong it is not ear shattering, nobody complains that it is too loud, but if I can not play them the way I want to then I have to decide what to do, now, the woofer that was replaced on the right speaker did not have any issues, and like I mentioned the HSU HB1 MK2 was playing a bit louder with no problem, but I have those for movies along with the HSU center, but for music the SM55s are so much sweeter...

Have you checked out the new Demand series? They have 3 models just like the old SM series. The Demand 9 is in the middle just like the SM55.

I looked at the whole series, not looking to spend more than around $500, I will play and tweak the HSU HB1 MK2 this weekend to try and convince myself to add another pair for music only...
