I have a DC-1 I'm using as a preamp for a two channel setup. (Unbalanced RCA to a power amp with passive speakers)
It doesn't say in tbe manual or anywhere online if the DC-1 is a passive or active preamp. Does anyone know?
Also is the DC-1 a stepped attenuator?
Thanks guys.

The analog portion of the DC-1 is an active preamp... it has an active (powered) buffer stage. The Volume control in the DC-1 is a "digitally controlled analog ladder network"... which is a resistor ladder network, with analog switches, in a chip, controlled by a microprocessor....
(The knob is just an encoder that tells the processor to turn the Volume up or down... and the clicks on the knob are just mechanical clicks added "for feel".)
In fact, the DC-1 actually contains EIGHT of these... Each channel of the DC-1 is fully differential and balanced, so there are four different signal paths to control... And, beyond that, two channels of volume control are used for each, in a rather ingenious way, to further reduce noise and distortion.

Thank you Keith for your gracious answer!
What is the input impedance and output impedance rated at in ohms on the pre-amp section?
