Well the thing that is more likely to improve it is replacing the UMC-1 as a DAC - not replacing the preamp stage with the RSP-1 because the RSP-1 is only a preamp. Not saying the RSP-1 won't imporve things. Having said that I wouldn't reccomend the MC-700 for improvement either. The XMC-1 on the other hand does sound quite good.

I believe the UMC-1 is 5 or 7 channel. The RSP-1 is a preamp for 2 channel. Different animals.

I know the umc-1 is a 7 channel preamp. I dont run it as 7 channel I run it as 2 channel. I have an external dac already. so I am just trying to get back to simple and function wise correct.

I was researching some DACs today and ran across a site that tests a lot of this stuff and I notice the umc200 was listed so I read the review. said that it had a ton of distortion at higher levels . I figure the umc1 was similar since the 200 was after the umc1 . so I decided to go ahead and buy the RSP1 off the forum.

When recommending products it's best to understand what the O.P. is asking for. In this case he's asking about the difference between the processor he's currently using and a pre-amp that he thinks might be worth a try. While there's nothing wrong with using a processor as a pre-amp (a friend of mine just bought his first piece of Emo gear, a XMC-1, to use as a 2-channel pre), and pointing out the difference is fine, trying to steer him to a $2,500 processor when he's asking about a <$300 pre-amp is ridiculous.

There is a RSP-1 calling ny name on the forun The RSP-1 and RSP-2 (roughly the same processor with a change to the front) were highly sought after pieces of Emotiva gear. They are probably some of the best sounding pre-amps of their vintage and and would likely stack well against the current XSP-1 (which later replaced the RSP-2). The "R" in RSP if for reference. For the price he's asking I would definitely get in touch with him! I can't believe one of our most ardent recommend-ers of gear hasn't jumped all over the chance to own such a great piece of equipment for such a price! He would definitely gain some much needed knowledge when recommending gear on this site.

I think he is perhaps a little confused in what he's looking for. I'm not entirely sure what the point of the RSP-1 is. That's a preamp with no dac. Is he trying to improve the sound of the UMC-1's digital to analog output or is he trying to use vinyl or something? Since he didn't mention vinyl, but did mention the UMC, hence my answer. I would like to reccomend a cheaper multi channel unit that sounds good, but unfortunately I don't know any. I too think the price is too much.

Be sure to let us know how you like it. I've owned 2 of them and enjoyed them both. But as it is with this hobby, I sold both of them over the years. But I do still own it's brother, the RPA-2 amp. It won't be going anywhere anytime soon!!

I asked how the RSP-1 was compared to other emotiva preamps. I also mentioned I am using the UMC-1. I didnt ask how the RSP1 compared to the UMC1. I only said I was using the UMC1 and I said there has to be better sounding preamps for stereo and I was looking at the RSP1 because there is one for sale on here now. not confused about anything. A DAC was mentioned so I have added that I already have one. havnt used it but I will.
there is not a lot of stuff on the net on the RSP-1 and I have looked here also and didnt find it. doesnt mean I didnt miss it.
so anyhow...I went ahead and bought the RSP-1 so I will find out soon enough. I run 2 channel. what I did find on it was that it had a great soundstage which I dont think the umc-1 does.

What would you use the RSP-1 with for two channel (A dac? Vinyl?) I haven't heard the RSP-1. I've heard the USP-1 - which was a lot of fun but not the most transparent to the signal - but great for a good jam with nice punch and dynamics. The USP-1 I believe was a lot cheaper than the RSP-1 so it's quite possible that those two impressions wont correlate. I have heard the XSP-1 which is probably quite different from the RSP-1. It sounded quite different from the USP-1.

It sounded quite different from the USP-1. There are a number of analog sources that you can use either the RSP-1/2 or the XSP-1 with. Furthermore, in my multiple set ups I use a XSP-1 when listening to 2-channel exclusive material in my main listening room. The DAC in my CD player is more than adequate and the phono stage is pretty decent. When needed, such as going from my TV to the XSP-1 to listen to 2-channel streaming, I'll run the signal through the XDA-2 and then to the XSP-1. I could use the XMC-1 for everything for simplicity sake, but I prefer the sound of the XSP-1 for my main 2-channel listening. For my bedroom system everything goes to my XDA-2 then to my Pre-1. The Pre-1 gives me the sound quality and the ability to tailor the sound to my needs in the bedroom. And, not only does it do what I need it to do, it cost me 7% of an XMC-1 (which I would not need because I don't need 8 speakers in my bedroom), roughly a 1/3rd of what a DC-1, and a little bit more than a half of what the SP-1 would cost. Granted, the Pre-1 initially sold for more than the USP-1 (especially when in brick-and-mortar stores; but I got it when Emotiva did their fire-sale on the units). The RSP-1 was roughly double the cost of the USP-1 because, as anyone with knowledge of the Emotiva product line and as I also eluded to, the "U" series was Emotiva's bargain/value line and the "R" line was their REFERENCE line. The RSP-1 was not a tarted up version of the USP-1 so your impressions would definitely not correlate. The XSP-1, however, is correlative as it is the direct replacement for the RSP-1 and 2.

FWIW I thought the XSP-1 definitely helped the XDA-2 when hooked up to Emotiva power amps. THat was my biggest complaint was that it sounded dynamically flat. Attached to the XSP-1, it sounded better. The PT-100 and the DC-1 are a different story; theydo a better job of driving the preamps directly. I ended up taking the XSP-1 out of the chain in favor of a direct XLR connection to the XPA-1 with the DC-1. Though interestingly I preferred it in the chain with the lower powered UPA-2.

I purchased my RSP2 from the forum. I haven't compared it to another but the original owner compared it to the XSP. Claimed the move was lateral. If I remember correctly, kept the XSP for bass Management.

The RSP-1 should blow the doors off the UMC-1 in terms of being a 2-channel preamp. Enjoy.
