Is it better to have large main speakers and small surrounds or can the speakers all be the same large towers? Amperage for the surrounds, the same as the mains or less? Thank you for you consideration.

You can use towers for surrounds.

The surround signal will be less demanding than the front stage. If running separate amplifiers, the amps supplying surrounds can be smaller wattage generally.

Thank you for you consideration. Large main speakers, (or whatever main loudspeakers appeal most to your ears) are the foundation for the system. In my opinion, the center channel configuration is the next priority or equally important, if you want the best of everything from one system. The Subwoofer, makes smaller surround speakers nearly as effective as the mains, as it carries the low frequencies from those surrounds when properly configured. Surround speakers the same size as the mains is way overkill, with much less source signal generally fed to them. Amplifier power should be matched to the power handling capacity of the mains. Less needed for the surrounds, but enough if you play at spirited levels. Bill

It's your thing, do what you what to do! the lossless surround and immersive formats regard all speakers as full range. Whether you want to use small speakers with cross over to a sub or subs is up to you. There is no right or wrong or over kill or over powered to the problem. One can be underpowered, but that is another discussion.

I've experienced same model towers all around and it was brilliant! But that's overkill as others have said.
Soundbar and tiny satellites with sub works just fine for my buddy with no extra room, and his wife likes it that way.
I place great importance on the front 3 channels, and use good sounding wall-hang-able speakers for the 4 surrounds along with subs. The side surrounds are overkill-powered by a 200 watt amp, and the back surrounds are powered by a very old Onkyo stereo receiver that's maybe 40 watts if it's lucky. I host Movie Night! every few weeks and when there's a great 7.1 movie playing, it's fabulous!
So getting back to your original questions, anything you come up with will work. If you have a nice, great big theater, and you want to use large speakers and large amps, even better!
