I never tried the V15 in my XA, even though it MUST have been the most popular choice at the time. Started with the Empire 999VE that was the same 75 bucks I paid for the turntable in 69. Sounded harsh no matter how I lined it up and replaced it with a Stanton 681EEE. The harshness disappeared immediately. Bill (the other!) Did you ever change out the clunky tone arm that came with the AR TT? I've read you can hit the base with a hammer and it will NOT skip.

Had 2 buddies in College in mid-1980’s - both had AR XA or XB with original chunky S-arm / head shell. For very SIMPLE, BASIC TT, if they were adjusted correctly with a good cart, they sounded pretty darned SWEET! (and yes, we simulated the “mallet on the plinth” trick, and it DID work - never skipped a beat...

I never found it to be clunky, per se, just primitive compared to others, so far as the initial adjustments were concerned. I got a kick out of the seesaw gram scale it comes with and the tool for adjusting the length to match the cartridge. Once it was all dialed in you were set.....just needed to powder the belt periodically. And yes you could whack it with a hammer without it skipping. But if the floor wasn’t solid it would skip plenty. Bill

Still have my Stanton 681EEE. Back n the 70's & 80's I made some recordings with it. At that time the recordings were of great quality and people loved the results. Heard that people at radio stations used them quite often.

Mine is now a 681EEE(S) Shibata stylus....not sure these days you can find one. The shape gets deeper into the groove than the elliptical supposedly an improvement, especially with older records, contacting part of the groove previously untouched. Bill

By the way, when I said not easy to find the Shibata stylus, I meant specifically for the Stanton. Last time I looked years ago, nobody was making one, except finding NOS on Ebay.
