Fun day, spent trying to get Sony UBP-X800 to find my dedicated Volumio music server, just wouldn't do it. Everything has found Volumio except the Sony. Went into router assign Static IP's to all my devices, no luck. Finally (out of desperation) change operating system from Volumio back to Vortexbox and voila worked. What a p.i.t.a. As I was working on that issue, decided to xn Plex Server on my Linux Mint machine, just-in-case. It has a lot of identifying to do, been running awhile.
I used a D&M Escient music server for years that was great. They shut down the proxy server and turn them into semi-bricks. Been looking for something since that I could build. Nothing has been "the one" that does everything I want to do. NEVER ENDING SEARCH for server nirvana.

So, I assume you are using Volumio on an R-Pi. How do you have your Pi connected to your Sony?

@texzick - have you tried Roon? Free to try, but you may find yourself hooked.

Mark Mark, I use a Dell Optiplex 330: 1.6 Ghz Pentium Dual, 2 Gb ram, $25 garage sale special streaming via home network. It's had no trouble with the modest specs running headless Vortexbox or Volumio with GUI but designed to be headless. Your Rpi will do the same thing. The Integra has a good android app for streaming we use on the partio. The Anthem AVM-60 (as the XMC) doesn't have streaming abilities. I got the Sony UBP-X800 because it has Home network music server streaming abilities from it's home page. From the settings menu, it has a "find network server" function, once found it's ready to play like a DVD. wilberthegoose, I was almost there Sunday. have not heard a complaint about Roon. But $500 for a program? (I's scared to try it) $200 seems more reasonable. I can get Plex Pass for $120 lifetime, though I'm just learning it and don't know if we'll like it. I thought JRiver was not refined enough. Roon will be my last option. I liked the flexibility of the Escient Music Servers, but everything is $2000 & up and not doing that again. Too bad Emotiva didn't build streaming & USB into ERC-4 type product.

Did the Sony work before, or was this the first time for the Sony.I understand Sony uses allot of Android for the TVs at least and Linux on the other gear. If it did work on the Sony before, could an update kill it?

But, you have to manually set up Volumio to use DLNA. Here's an old link for how to do that. It may be different with the newest version of Volumio, but you get the idea. -->HERE's THE LINK<---Mark

The Sony just didn't like Volumio, now I know why. Thx guys! Glad to help! The streaming thing is great, but it can be maddening unless it's basically automatic. I went through that with a lot of options and kept getting frustrated. While Roon is pricey, the big benefits are that it's so easy to set up as long as one has Roon-ready endpoint, it works great even for multi-room situations, and the interface it very nice. Once I got Roon, the only issues I have had are that when I have a power outage, I have to make sure my core re-started and that any DAC at an endpoint is also powered on. Other than that - "it just works". Volumio is good, also. It's just less automatic. Mark

In my experience with DLNA, you need to be aware of performance issues. Example, I had a library of > 2000 CDs, and the DLNA client would take forever to load the artist/album list.

I had issues just getting it to work...period. And, I wanted to use Tidal, and Tidal integration with things using DLNA was not good. It does not work at all with jRiver (even though their website at the time sure made it sound like it should), and last I checked it was not an option with Volumio. It was long rumored, but as of my last check not delivered. That was what led me to try Roon. And, I'm glad I did...so much easier. It's worth the $ to me to have it just work right and be easy to set up. Mark
