Tidal/Qobuz/Roon = Paid.
Amazon music = Prime member benefits.
Spotify/Apple/Pandora = not paid.

I don't pay for a music streaming service. I just tried Roon and purchased the Lifetime Package. I only stream my own CDs internally in my house. Its an awesome software package. I was extremely resistant to it until now. I thought people were nuts to spend $500 on music playback software, but now I'm an advocate.

I have Amazon Music Unlimited due to the small upcharge after already having Prime. I typically don't stream (occasionally in my truck) but use it to test drive albums before purchase. If I stream in the house it is via JRiver with ripped FLAC.

Maybe I'm not left out, I use Apple Music for in house wifi streaming and in car bluetooth but I don't pay a subscription. Should I tick Apple Music or not? I do pay for it, it is in IOS and I pay for that as part of each device cost. The thread title does ask what service do you pay for but in a way you are paying for Apple Music. So I ticked Apple Music and I’m 1 of only 3 who has, surely anyone/everyone with an iDevice pays for Apple Music so should tick it. Cheers Gary

Cheers Gary It may be different for you in Aus, but in the US at least to get Apple Music it is $9.99 a month. So its basically the same price as Spotify, and those two compete directly with each other. Tidal lags behind and they are $20 a month for the high resolution setup.

Cheers Gary They may pay for it but don’t actively listen, therefore they opt to not check the box. I understand this option, that’s what I opted to do. Nick

Streaming Tidal through my Bluesound Node 2i and it does a great job. Never thought I would join the “streamer crowd”. Lol

Last week I moved my Bluesound Node 2i from my office stereo rig with a DC-1, to my home theater rig with a XMC-1 as we were hosting a party. Tidal never sounded good.

Something is amiss if Tidal didn’t sound good! Agreed. While I’m very pleased with the sound of Tidal on both systems, I wouldn’t expect the office system to keep up the home theater system. That being said, your comment got me thinking... I wonder how the 4K Apple TV compares to the Node 2i using Tidal. Time permitting, I’ll compare them this weekend.

I would be very interested to know this. I have an AppleTV4K and got rid of Tidal because I was not super impressed with it (it was not bad, just not really that much better than Spotify). So if you find the Apple TV to be a step down from the Node that may explain a lot of things.

I use a soTm sms-200 Ultra se connected to my Mac Mini as the input and output via ethernet to my Mytek Brooklyn DAC. The DAC that you play Tidal with WILL make a huge difference in how Tidal will sound. Playing via TV app via TV speakers will give you tv sound.

I am referring to using the Tidal app built into the AppleTV going directly into the hdmi input of the RMC-1. The only DACs that should be used in this setup are the RMC-1 DACs. So how would this compare sound wise to some of the more complicated setups I see here going through a PC using Roon etc? Really I guess it will depend on what bitrate the Apple TV sends music out compared to other setups. We do know that the AppleTV app does not support MA.

Non-Professional Listening Comparison of Tidal via Bluesound Node 2i vs. Apple TV 4K Equipment * XMC-1 in Direct mode * B&K Comp. Ref. 7250 Amplifier * NHT 2.9 Speakers Connections: * Node 2i > Digital Coaxial > XMC-1 * Apple TV 4K > 18 Gbs HDMI > XMC-1 * Both Node and Apple connected via 1.2 Gbps Wi-Fi Tidal Music Reference * 8 higher quality recorded tracks streamed from Tidal were compared between the Apple and the Node * Only 16 bit/44 KHz tracks used My Observations * The Node 2i had slightly better resolution * Instruments and voices sounded slightly more natural on the Node 2i * CAUTION: Pending on your DAC and/or system, you may not hear the slight difference Wife’s Observation * Which ever that one is, it sounds better (Node 2i) Outcome * I’ll keep the Node 2i connected to the XMC-1 home theater rig * I’ll use my desktop computer’s USB out to feed the DC-1 in my office stereo rig Best of Luck

Thank you for the review. I just installed the RMC-1 so I would expect similar results to what you had with your XMC-1
