I was looking at the XPA-5, XPA-2 and the XPA-1. How much better is the XPA -2 from the XPA-5 and the XPA-1 from the XPA-2? Is there really a difference (sonically) from the XPA-5, XPA-2 and XPA-1? Trying to decide on which amps to go with. Any help would be appreciated.

YES! Yes yes yes. There is a huge difference sonically. So much so that you can't even compare them. It has nothing to do with the fact that each one is more powerful than its predecessor. If you can afford the XPA-1s, they are no contest 10x better than the other two models. (Bare in mind that I have owned all three of those amps and used them all in both home theater and 2-channel setups).
Now what does better mean? Better means more musical, more control, more refined, less noise, more revealing, more enjoyable and relaxing. Among other things. The XPA-5 is a great entry into separates, but it is nowhere near the performance of either the XPA-2 or XPA-1. The XPA-5 performs pretty poorly for music, though was great for HT. The XPA-2 has a wonderful sound also, but the XPA-1 is lightyears ahead of it. The XPA-2 is far more musical than the XPA-5. It has a higher current power supply than the XPA-5 and can better drive your speakers. It is a nice sounding amp, though it's substantially noisier than the XPA-1. Noise is what hides the music.
The less noise you have in your system, the harder your system has to work to perform. If you remove the noise, the amplifier doesn't have as much extraneous information to amplify. This means that it can more accurately amplify the music only and better control your speakers. This helps with Phase and Timing issues where noise and music battle over whether the speaker driver should be moving in or out at any given time. Thus providing a cleaner, clearer, more dynamic sound.
Long story short. They are upgrades of their predecessors for a reason. Emotiva especially wouldn't sell the amplifier if it wasn't lightyears better than the unit before it.

Hehe....guys....funny, do you really believe in powercords and additional transformers? Unbelievable... I always use power cords. I have yet to find a way for my amps to work without one.

Even if I set my equipment near an outlet, I also find they work better if I plug them in with the proper power cord. Although I find I end up using more electricity this way..bummer
