And FWIW, I have owned 3 of the ATV's but have never had an issue either. An occasional reboot from time to time but that happens with almost anything these days including the XMC-1. I bought the 4K ATV thinking I would have upgraded to a 4K device (projector) by now but just haven't bitten the bullet on this yet. The 4K has thus far performed flawlessly within its somewhat limited scope.
All that out of the way I'm also inclined to think for most people the Roku device might be a better solution.

Well if Nick, Gary, and David haven't had issues, then there *really* must be no issues. I, too have had no issues with using two ATV’s. I also own but hardly ever use a Roku and an Amazon Fire TV Stick. I’m using Apple TV with ARC, etc, THROUGH a Denon AVR into my LG 4K OLED. So, there must be no issues for most users...LOL

I love the Roku also. I have the Ultra on most TV's and they are great. I have never had an Apple TV, but with all I read about issues with them - I have no motive to try them. Mark Issues? I’ve never had the first one with any of the many ATV or ATV 4K. In addition to the recent Netflix thing, as I have been reading the various threads on the new gen Emo processors, it seemed to me I heard a lot of issues w/the ATV not working well with them....more than w/other sources. Mark I stand by my statement, I’ve read many things in my life that I’ve found untrue. Most issues are user error and they rarely ever come back and admit that fact. Just sayin. 😎

There you have it: Nick has had no issues, thus there must be no issues. #micdrop ... and Mark hasn’t had any issues either, but he’s read about them, so they can be as big as he wants them to be. 🤔 Unfortunately many of these responses are off topic as the OP didn’t ask about Roku, or Fire TV, or any other external box. The question was, upgrade to Apple TV4K or stick with TV apps that seem to be working for him. So Nick’s response is at least on topic, whereas you just seem to be stirring the pot.

Ummmm...not stirring the pot...just reporting what I've been reading here and what I have experienced w/Roku. The ATV issues I've read here have been enough that it stood out to me, and I have wondered "Why would anyone buy one?". Sure, folks like Nick and others have not had issues, but...I've seen a lot who did. Personally, based on all I know, I'd go Roku...not ATV. Aside from being trouble-free for me (on 4 TV's including a mix of 4K and non-4K TV's), it's got all the apps I would want, the Roku Channel itself is quite good, and it has many nice features including the remote that allows me to plug in headphones and listen while the TV is muted. And, regarding the OP's question..."is it worth it?" At its price, I'd say "no". At least for me...YMMV. The OP seemed to be getting all they needed from their SmartTV other than seeing iPhotos. There seem to be other ways to view iPhotos that don't require the ATV. I ended up with 3 Roku Ultra's and 1 Roku Streaming Stick + for ~$300-ish. And, I have the same remote and same interface for each TV. That's a bonus for being family-friendly. Mark

Mark So the staring the pot comment wasn't directed at you (I quoted someone else, you were just mentioned), but I'd call your comments 'off topic', as I said, the OP didn't ask for opinions on various streaming boxes. More to the point however, what if you started a thread about upgrading your NCores to the new NCore 'Delicious', you've been hearing good things about it, but is it really worth the money or should I just keep my NCore 'Tasty's'? I come along and say, what? I've read nothing but crap about NCore, why would you even consider another one, you should get VLT 'Sublimes', I think they're really ... Sublime and really? NCore, geesh. My point is that you didn't ask what everyone's favorite amp was, you asked if someone knew something about the Delicious, and could they help you decide. If you think it's ok to change the subject to meet your idea of what the topic is then all our threads become unfocused and waste people's time. Now indeed, Apple brings out 'core' groups who like to support or deride them, I'm in one group, you and Keith are in the other, the difference is, you won't find me trying to subvert your NCore thread. Edit: I apologize to Priapulus for so much off topic discussion.

Plainly some people have issues with ATVs and others don’t. Personally I seriously doubt that it’s a hardware quality control issue. So that leaves set up differences and connected gear incompatibility as the only possible causes. Since many of us have no issues with ATVs connected to XMC-1’s that leaves just set up differences as being the issues with that combination.
I have now assumed the brace position.
Cheers Gary

I'm not talking about issues - I just prefer Roku to ATV. They both work.

I apologize if my comments have been taken the wrong way and I would like to clarify things here. Whether or not you see any issues with the ATV is solely dependent on your system. That is the gear you have in it and how you have it configured. The only issue that I would consider a bug has to do with Atmos. The other things are simply how the ATV and the TV itself handles CEC. Not really bugs in my opinion, just how each company sets up their gear to operate. So either it works the way you expect it to or it won't. Doesn't mean there is a real issue here. In my case, with my current TV, it doesn't play well with the ATV, so for me the ROKU is the better choice for my family.

I mean what the hell was Mark thinking, suggesting such absurd-ness? Can we get him banned? Or 50% at a minimum?

Apple household here and I have 3 ATVs including one 4K. Only downside in my experience for ATV 4k is that it does not play Youtube 4K so in the rare occasion where I want to watch Youtube 4K, I use the youtube app built into my Sony XBR.

Like I said earlier, I have three boxes on three separate TV's and all three have been issue-less. One Apple TV 4K on the main system, an Apple TV 1080p on the bedroom system, and a Roku Premiere 4K on the TV in the basement. I find the Apple interface to be "slicker" and the product itself is built better material wise. Has a "higher end" feel. Other than that, they all do their respective jobs for me without a problem.
I would say that if you are in the Apple world with multiple devices, give the Apple TV a go, otherwise save some money and get the Roku. You will find out when you hook up whether it plug and play or not.

The OP was concerned about content with the ATV. I raised my concern on issues and added an option for him to consider re. content and some nice features. He can take it or leave it. Mark
