“The end is near!” again, this time they say it’s true. The end of support comes January 14, 2020. 😱 If you’re still using it, as I am for system #2, what will you do? Are you going to Windows 10? Have you already done so? Do you like it? What was the learning curve? Can you set it up to run like 7?
If not Windows 10, then what. Needless to say that I found 7 so easy to navigate and use.

I will continue to use Windows 7 for the 10 minutes a year that I need it for as long as it'll run my required 2 programs that won't run on Linux. Windows 10 was a complete resource pig on my system. The rest of the time I use a mix of KDE neon and elementary OS... Both lightning fast on my aging PC.

I have an old laptop and a backup tower that run it. They exist just to run a Rorschach scoring program that I do not want to replace in order to use it on Windows 10. As I am changing jobs at present, and will not need the program again, I think it is soon time to say goodbye to those old friends.

My old Gateway running 7 was JUST new enough to make the Win 10 cut. Running on that for several years now solid as a rock Bill

I switched to Win 10 a few years ago and the transition was fairly seamless. A few things about the new UI I do not like but I've either learned to cope with them or gotten third-party programs to resolve them.
At work we have millions in test equipment running various flavors of Win 7/NT, often embedded, and the vendors often do not support the upgrades required for Win 10 so we're looking at a huge mess. Including a fight with IT about how to keep older gear running on the network behind a lab firewall or whatever vs. spending millions we don't have on new equipment.

I switched to Linux (Ubuntu on the PC, Linux Mint on the laptop) about 5-6 years ago, but I installed it in a dual boot setup 'just in case', with Win 10 on a small partition. Good thing I did since Logitech no longer supports browser based programing of their Harmony remotes. There are a few apps written in Linux for programming the remotes, but it's half GUI and half command line. Command line sucks! I did that for ~3 years when I was in IT. I've emailed Logitech support 3-4 times and have yet to get anyone to answer why they did that. At any rate, there are a few ways to upgrade to Win 10 free of charge. If I ever get the drivers needed for Win 7 Pro on my laptop I plan to do just that.

Windows 7 is safe as long as you isolate it (remove network productivity). Once Microsoft ends patches, the vulnerabilities will be left exposed and you're a sitting duck.
Consider Windows 7, after support ends in January, to be as risky as Windows XP.

How old is the PC you have that is using W7? I can't recall how long ago it was since W7 was out of my house. In any case, I love W10. It's the most stable Windows OS ever, and once I let go of my pre-conceived notions leftover from old Windows versions - W10 is also very intuitive. There are some odd quirks, but most will never experience them. And, if you do, it's easy to find how to do what you want on the web. Mark

Mark, any Windows 7 units, send them to me. I live in a suburb of Seattle, a sanctified sanctuary city area (with feces on most of public sidewalks down in Pioneer Square and near the Pike Place Market), and my son works for MSFT. I'll take it to the front entrance of the main headquarter's bldg of MSFT (there are beaucoup of their bldgs around here) and dump it (no poop, just the windows 7 computer) on the main steps. Then you can go out to your local computer store and buy a brand new computer with Windows 10, unless Windows 11 is already out. I was "happy as a clam" (local phrase from Seattle's I'vars Fish and Chips stores) with Windows XP. It was perfect for all my needs The idea is to make most of us think our computer product is now junk. It sells a lot of new products .......... Get It? That's why no more MSFT for me. My new $325-$350 equivalent HP Chromebook (I just bought at Costco for $199, 14", very well built, 4GB/64GB, B&O speakers, wireless mouse, etc.) is great! Boots up in about 6 seconds (almost as fast as my Alfa Romeo Giulia AWD, 0-60mph, 5.1 seconds ... ). My wife has an Apple iPad 9.7 and iPhone 7, purchased for a small fortune. I have an android Motorola 6g from Costco for $195, one year ago. Great buy and she actually likes it better than her iPhone (better photos and screen) about 3.5 times the price of my Moto 6g. The only other apple products we have at home are Fugi Apples. They are the best apples on the planet, period. (originally designed in Japan). Happy As A Clam! Sorry for the blue photo color. This is actually a classy looking very dark gray matte finish. Yeah I know, Chromebook? It is is perfect for old farts like me. ..................................................... THE END ..................................................

Windows 10 is a big improvement over Win7. I hated all Windows (from 3.x up) until 10. Zorin Linux is a good Linux OS for folks who want to switch over because the GUI is similar to Windows 7 and is a Ubuntu derivative. Zorin will run on lowish powered pc (single core, 1 ghz)- just make sure you have 2 gigs of ram. Chrome OS is a Linux variant. I run Linux Mint on 3 pc's with 2 cores and it runs well, Win 10 on AMD Ryzen 4 core, 8 gig ram . (a bit hungry)
I get to upgrade my Sis-in-law's pc to Win10 next week, oh joy.
Agree with ChuckieNut about Fugi apples. lol

Nick- Win 10 is a power hog & has so much 'stuff' running in the background that is unnecessary but you can turn off. search "what to do after installing win 10" and you will find how to streamline it. Microsoft has stuck their nose into you life with it being Microsoft Store centric- turn it off.

I bought a hp 17-by1023cl and am slowly moving logins and passwords over from my win 7 laptop. I will be the first to admit that I am very technology dumb but I cannot figure win 10 out. Seems everything is hidden and I cannot find it. I hit the start button and do a search and it finds it but I have no idea where it is in the software.
I hate change and get frustrated with new things. I know I am old. I could very easily live with my old Motorola silver flip phone.

Hey folks, something I've noticed running Windows (7, 10) When you upgrade to solid state drives, Windows runs better, faster, less crashes (rarely w Win10), no defrag ever again. I load Windows onto 128 gb SSD drive, then load My: docs, pictures, videos onto a mechanical HDD. I like separating OS from my 'stuff'- two reasons- easier to upgrade/repair the OS and if you get a virus or HDD fails, you don't loose your 'stuff'. You can pull the drive & xn in another pc if needed. 120-128 gig SSD sell for for $25. All my pc's have SSD now. My server is 64 gig SSD for the OS with HDD holding music & videos- never had a crash. (knock on wood) Download the Windows 10 iso from MS. Pull your old HDD & install W10 onto new SSD then xn the old HDD, erase Windows 7 from the HDD and direct all the Windows 10 My docs, pictures, videos to Disk #D. There are a few more steps, but that's pretty much it; easy to find step by step on the www. A faster SSD & new xn of Windows 10, you'll think you got a new pc.

See I can't even get a link to work. Mark Search "what to do after installing win 10" and/or "streamline windows 10 more like windows 7" There are a few very good tutorials that address those exact problems that can help you. If I can find it, I'll post a link to a great one that is step by step that I used. Windows 10 is a little sneaky & does hide things you're use to (like Control Panel) There is some shareware that helps you transfer your PW & software license to a new install of Win10, you'll have to do a search for it. With Linux, I don't go through all that stuff; do a back-up then xn new OS, re-install from back-up and all my settings & stuff is there. Done. It will even xn any additional software that I added if I want it to. Jeff

I agree with you....
And I still miss my Motorola Star-Tac....
Windows 10 is quite different - and it almost seems like they deliberately "moved all the controls around just to be different". Take comfort in knowing that Windows 8 was awful... and Windows 10 is a step back in the right direction... and you will get used to it.) In fact Windows 10 really isn't so bad once you get used to it. (I wouldn't say I like it better than Windows 7 but you do get used to it.)
And, from what I've seen, it actually runs a bit faster than Windows 7 on some middle of the road computers. And, as a few other folks have mentioned, if you upgrade to an SSD, ANY version of Windows will boot MUCH faster. (Most new computers now come with SSDs - and they've gotten quite cheap as an upgrade.)
There is also another option... called Classic Shell. This is basically a Windows Shell which can make Windows 10 look like Windows 7 (or even Windows XP).
I've never used it, but it is open source, and quite popular, and I'm told it works pretty well. (However, you're probably better off biting the bullet, and just getting used to Windows 10.)
A few people have mentioned options like ChromeBooks. You will also notice that many newer laptops come with a relatively small SSD.
Depending on your needs either of those may or may not be a good option.
A Chromebook is very convenient for checking your e-mail, but it isn't going to run Adobe Photoshop, or Solidworks. Likewise, you can write a letter just fine on any one of several free office-type apps in Linux, but you won't be running any of the big popular commercial apps on it.
And many of the new models offer really good battery life - but at the cost of not much raw processing horsepower if you need it.
You can also get some really powerful new machines at quite reasonable prices.... just be sure to read all the details. (I've found that many modern "utility machines" are rather underpowered... but you can find plenty of really screaming models if you look in the catalog under "gaming machines". )
