I want to join the Secret Mono-Block Society (haha) I currently have an XPA-2 gen 2 powering a pair of Klipsch Palladium P38s. They are 4 ohm speakers and love power, with three 8" woofers. The XPA-2 pairs well with the speakers, and sounds good. Just curious on anyone's thoughts about adding another XPA-2 and using them in mono-block mode, or selling the XPA-2 and taking advantage of the upcoming deal on a pair of HC-1s ($100 off, Eggnog Special)
I originally thought about finding two XPA-1s gen 2, but that seems like a long shot. Budget is a concern, I have 2 kids in college, so two DR-1s are probably out of the question.
Another question for the all knowing folks around here, compare what I have now vs a DR-2?
I think an HC-1 would look terrific next to these stunning P38s.
Thanks.....

I think neither is the answer. I know we all like to tweak our gear but I’m not sure either option would provide much benefit over what you have now.

Get DR-1s, a DR-2 or find some XPA-1s on the secondary market.

I went from a XPA-2 G2 to a DR-2 and there was not a huge jump in the two amps. I really like my DR-2, but the XPA-2 was no slouch. It may be worth a call to Emotiva to see if they happen to have any XPA-1s to sell by any chance. They have had a few b stocks show up from time to time.

Now that you mention that...I think I remember Keith talking about how it was not a great idea to drive low ohm speakers with a XPA-2 in mono block mode.

After reading this thread a few times, I'm probably going to keep using my XPA-2 G2 instead of a pair of HC-1 mono blocks. My original thought was getting another XPA-2 G2 and using them in mono block mode, but my power hungry speakers might prove difficult with twin XPA-2s. It sounds like I won't hear much difference going to HC-1s, but the thought of mono blocks still excites me!

I too would like to join the mono block club but don't want to shell out $3000.00 dollars for two DR-1s. The biggest change in my mind would be in channel separation with the two amps being totally separate and imaging is a top consideration for me. However, the original XPA-2 had the best channel separation measurements that Audioholics had ever measured at the time. The XPA-2 Gen 2 images spectacularly but I'm always looking to achieve that extra level, even if it's small.

For those considering this move if you haven't already please read the two online reviews at the product page link found below. While there are only two of them both provide high praise for these amps. Given Emotiva's generous 30 day trial period what do you have to loose except a fist for a dollars for return shipping. emotiva.com/collections/amps/products/hc-1

Those DR-1s are out of my price range also, so are the used XPA-1 G2 that are in the classified section here for $2k. But the Eggnog Special for two HC-1s for $1300 is within reach. I was hoping Santa would've brought me a pair!

I'm just not sure how much I would gain with HC-1s over an XPA-2 G2. I guess with a little cash for returns....I would know.
