After wasting days trying to get Atmos to work, I discover the it's mostly not available.
1) I downloaded some Atmos demos which work fine with VLC on my HTPC, so there is nothing wrong with my setup.
2) I bought a 4K Roku stick that supports Atmos. But Netflicks doesn't support Atmos on the Roku!!! Netflicks doesn't support Atmos on the Win10 Netflick app either (Movie description shows Atmos, but all you get is 5.1). Apparently the _only_ way to get Atmos Netflicks is to use the 4K AppleTV. I suppose Netflicks is holding out until Atmos becomes more popular, then they'll ask a fee for it.
3) Amazon Prime apparently has some Atmos titles, but are only supported on some Amazon devices.
4) So to experience Atmos I guess I've off to the video store to look for some Atmos Bluerays. I haven't rented or bought a DVD in 15 years (except for some bluerays to tryout my new blueray 4k player).
Sincerely /b

Netflix on ATV4K has Atmos content. Actually, ATV4K also has the digital copies of movies if it’s available in Atmos provides it as well.
But nothing sounds as good as Atmos off of a Blu-ray or 4K Blu-ray. The only issue along the lines of what you said, even if it’s decoded in Atmos, there isn’t that much material coming out of the ceiling speakers.

Since you have a 9.1.6 system it is worth keeping in mind that a large number of the more popular movies are 7.1.4, most (but not all) can be identified in the small print on rear of the case, look for "Atmos 7.1.4". Obviously DTS-X movies are 7.1.4 as per the DTS standard.
Happy New Year to All Gary

More than just where’s the content! Years after the release of ATMOS, just try being at a party 🎊 of REAL people and friends and finding somebody (anybody) who has a clue what in the Hell you’re talking about. Of all the technological flops that have come down the pike in the past decade or so, this one’s destined to be the greatest of them all. Or, since most normal people are clueless about it....will simply fade away.

Bill I just rented and watched (listened) to my first Atmos movies tonight. Though they weren't action flicks, I was impressed how much better they sounded compared to the usual 5.1 movies. It's a winner to me. /b

But I got a really good deal on an eight channel, A-800 Amplifier at the recent Emotiva closeout/sale. And I had some spare speakers, so why not? It's in a 12' x 12' Room, so with speakers arrayed every four to 6 feet apart. I'm really surrounded by sound! As a bachelor living solo, I can do as I wish! Sincerely /b

I can’t do front wides or rear backs because I don’t have room. And I decided to go with 4 heights because people were saying 4 is all I need. I should have at least done 2 more heights but that’s fine. Definitely feel like I’m much more “in” the movie with Atmos. No question it was worth it. Plus I was sick of playing Dolby Atmos movies without Atmos 😊.

I was sad when I started hearing the news. I’ve kept an Ebay search going for Samsung 3D sets that people are looking to unload, since my wife and I still enjoy it and have a nice 3D collection. That being said, I’m still running good with it. I got the “Seudo” 3D remastered version of the original Top Gun, (got excellent blu ray reviews) as a Christmas 🎄 gift. Be nice to own the pair when the new one becomes available. Bill

It is for sure a niche product, as many things are when you get into higher end AV products. I bet many average consumers don’t even know what 4K UHD players are. They know 4K TVs, but most people get 4K from Netflix etc. Having Atmos in my HT is a major benefit to me. It really is a big jump from a standard 5.1 system. And frankly I can’t see Dolby letting it fade away since a decent amount of people have invested in the speakers, amps, etc that Dolby would do itself major damage by dropping the format.

Sincerely/b Apologies, my post wasn’t really about how many channels you decided on, that’s a choice only you can make. It was simply about making sure you weren’t worried when only 7.1.4 channels of your 9.1.6 setup actually had sound emanating from it. I see lots of queries showing concern over “missing channels” and questioning whether it’s caused by systems problems and/or set up. When in fact it’s simply that’s how many channels are on the sound track in the first place. Happy New to All Gary

When I watch movies in theatres, like the latest Star Wars, I usually go to a Dolby Atmos one. However, in action sequences when there are so many sounds, it's hard to isolate the sounds from the overhead speakers. I don't have Atmos (yet) at home but apparently, quieter movies may lend themselves to a better appreciation of a well done Atmos soundtrack. A Quiet Place may be a good candidate if you can find it in CL or Ebay for cheap. referencehometheater.com/review/a-quiet-place-4k-blu-ray-review/. Atmos for music is also another niche right now as well as Atmos for dance clubs.

I'll second the support for Atmos, especially for non dedicated HT rooms. Some room configurations (mine in particular) only allowed 5.1, 7.1 was not do-able. I was not sold on height channels idea when introduced; seemed to be more marketing ploy than actual theater improvement. With quality imaging speakers, you can get that effect. Atmos gives me the option for 5.1.4 (6) and makes sense. I believe there are many others with the same situation. When I considered options, Atmos gives me better 'bang for the bucks'. In-ceiling speakers are cheaper, requires less power to drive, easier to install, more stealth and encompassing sound. We have 4 can lights we never use, perfectly positioned for Atmos. Priapulus mentioned the A-800, bridged to 4-ch, I was thinking the exact same thing- perfect. At one time, having speakers visibly everywhere was 'cool', now not so much.
Bill, I agree with your statement about most people have no clue about the new formats or audio options, they're listening to a damn soundbar and like it. I have a tabletop Cambridge radio that sounds better and the rear-projection tv sounds better than most soundbars. I no longer have family, friends (close by) that care about A/V any more. Someone said to me, "I thought you would have 'outgrown' that by now." Yes, I did consider it a slap in the face. (ahole) What's your hobby... besides getting old & bitchy. Guess I should be into macromey or something.

Someone said to me, "I thought you would have 'outgrown' that by now." Being retired and somewhat misanthropic, I find my major home past-time is sitting in front of the TV (mostly movies, Netflicks and Youtube). So I see investing in my home theatre as worthwhile. Besides my pension, I still work part-time, so I temporarily have disposable income for such toys. You know, we used to refer to television as the boob-tube, the great lobotomizer. responsible for the dumbing down of America. But I consider it to be opening a new age of enlightenment. On Netflicks I can watch a movie set in South Korea, made by Koreans; where I am exposed to a new culture: way of thinking, manners, cooking and architecture. They may happen upon an interesting building, and I can Google maps it, and virtually walk around and thru it via Google. Then on Youtube see a documentary of the building. Youtube has taught me how to cook many things, visit many places, history, cabinetmaking, electronics, a little Attic Greek and Latin, how to set up a home theatre, and many other things. It's true that there is a lot of garbage on the internet, but any reasonably intelligent person can sort the chaff from the wheat. Sincerely /b

Dolby will never allow it to fade for the simple reason that it has allowed them to retake dominance in licensing for optical media. DTS had a firm grip on lossless in the home disc market until they fell behind, and the studios have swayed back to Dolby for lossless audio.

David, I’ve read your posts for quite a while and know, your one of the “niche market” guys who got it done right! That being said and dispensing with sound bars for the moment, I see proper Atmos systems in the average home as both mainstream unattainable AND mainstream unsustainable. Bill

After wasting days trying to get Atmos to work, I discover the it's mostly _NOT_ available. 4) So to experience Atmos I guess I've off to the video store to look for some Atmos Bluerays. I haven't rented or bought a DVD in 15 years (except for some bluerays to tryout my new blueray 4k player). Well, I rented 4 recent movies. All the boxes had Atmos logos and had Atmos written on them. One movie had Atmos audio and sounded pretty good, though it wasn't an action flick. The other three refused to play Atmos. Two of them sounded good in dtx Neural-x, but were really 5.1. I tried all the settings on the XMC-2 and Player, but finally decided this was fraudulent advertising on the box. I guess I'll have to wait another year until Atmos becomes readily available on things like Netflicks. Annoyed, /blair p.s. I think I'll kill my "wide" channel and move the speakers back into my workshop. At least then they'll be doing something.

Others may have them and be able to confirm your findings or not. FWIW I agree on the questionable need for anything more than 7.1.4, there just isn’t the material (to watch) that makes it a worthwhile investment. Happy New Year to All Gary
