I have an XMC-2 I purchased in September 2019. My unit came with Firmware V1.5. I just downloaded V1.7 onto a freshly formatted USB drive (no other files on it) and began the firmware update process.
It began fine, churning through the various modules. But the process has been stuck on Firmware Update In Progress: Front Panel for the last 60+ minutes. The unit and the manual forbid turning off the unit or otherwise interrupting the update process, but neglects to give guidance for what happens when things freeze up. Now what do I do?? Did I just brick my unit doing everything you've told me to do?

I would call Emotiva and see if there is any way out of this state. My RMC-1 did this once. Finally I turned it off after I couldn’t take it anymore and it was bricked. Required a trip back to Franklin. So sorry for you. The unit came back quickly and has had no other issues. I hope you find a solution. Good job not turning it off. For sure that doesn’t work.

Did I just brick my unit doing everything you've told me to do? My XMC-1 got into that state once and took ~3 hours to complete an update. I think it was a bad USB stick but was never sure (nor was Emotiva). I figured it'd be dead if I turned it off so I left it on after it ran a half-hour or so and ran some errands. It was still going when I returned but I figure wehat the heck -- it had moved ahead one step in the process. I would leave it on overnight and see if it magically completes. If not, it may indeed be dead (bricked).

My XMC-2 hung up going from FW 1.5 to FW 1.7 when I first got it. I decided to shut it down because nothing was happening and figured It was under warranty and I could send it back. It booted up fine and took FW 1.7.

Status update, good news! After leaving it untouched in its frozen state overnight and deciding that I had nothing to lose, I powered the unit off and turned it back on. Low and behold the firmware update worked and everything is functional. Big relief!!

Glad to hear this. I had a similar incident with my UMC-1 when it was new. After a power off and power on, I tried the update again and it completed successfully. But I never updated firmware since 2010 and unit is still working okay. I have occasional audio drop out when switching PVR to CNN from CBC. I concluded that the UMC-1 does not like CNN.

Maybe the UMC-1 does not like Fake News. Looks like the UMC-1 is always looking out for you.
