I would be remiss if I didn't point something out.... Those movie sound tracks that you want to make sure remain in pristine condition...Have already gone through an awful lot of processing before they were put on that disc... Wow - I did NOT know that! I thought it was all just recorded "as is" and presented that way. Wow - I learn something new every day. Next things, you will try to tell me that those explosions that were visible and audible in space in Star Wars were not real. Mark

Analogies fail, thanks very much. There are "other factors" to be considered. And the primary one is sound quality. I didn't buy premium speakers, subwoofers, streamers, and DACs to listen to a pile of AV droppings. And I'll state unequivocally that good stereo separates sound better than any AV processor or receiver I've yet heard. I've tried again and again to get both premium quality stereo and movie performance from the same processor, and consistently failed. The AV stuff just does NOT sound as good. Now in theory, I could triple the number of wires and switches in the system and get a discreet stereo system and a discreet movie system - after all Mr. Mark Kline has done so - but I'm also required to maintain a certain simplicity to the system. When a component arrives for review, I never know what it might be, and everything has to move around to work with the review component. If the Oppo was working as designed, I could pull off the setup in the original post and get where I need to be. But repair is somewhere in the (post virus) future. Agree that an A/V pre pro or receiver doesn’t do 2 channel as well as a good preamp but the simple fix is a good preamp with Home Theater Bypass. You’ve been around enough to know this already so I’m curious as to why your not going this route?

It'd be nice if it did, but... And I just happened to notice, while browsing the Audio-gd website, another intriguing product, the Audio-gd Vacuum Tube HE-1 preamplifier; unfortunately, no HT bypass there either.

My experience with the XMC1 AV preamp is the complete opposite of what you’re worried about here. The whole purpose of me buying the thing was to accomplish exactly what you’re talking about. ....And I have been enjoying one hell of a high end stereo preamp that just happens to do a bang up job with movies also! Dropouts and marginal sound quality?? Not a chance of this....bear in mind most of the bad stuff you hear about comes from the relatively Small percentage of people who have problems and come to the forum looking for answers. Bill

Nice gear, what speakers are you using?
