I just received a 15 IPS master tape from the UK and connected my Technics 1520 reel to reel to the balanced inputs on my RMC-1
Threaded the tape, pressed play and within 2 minutes my wife came running down the stairs looking to find an orchestra in the family room.
I have NO DIRAC and NO room treatments! All I can tell you was the sound was AMAZING!!!
My wife and Were blown away! Even with the volume cranked on the RMC-1 I did even detect a wife of tape hiss!!!
Now I cant wait to try it with DIRAC!

Even with the volume cranked on the RMC-1 I did even detect a wife of tape hiss!!! How to say this correctly ... Is that a unit of measurement ... like 3.7 dB? A level of background noise ... like -69 dBA? or maybe just a typo? in any case glad the system is sounding good! 15 IPS tape ... pretty cool 😎

If it's that good, may want to pass on Dirac.....

Hi Guys:
I just joined the Emotiva Club with my purchase (finally after 12 months of analysis and comparison shopping - New RMC-1, XPA-7-Gen3 (main 7 channel large) & BasX 5 channel amp for 4 new ceiling ATMOS, Stealth Sp-1 for Phono input & extra analog in. Speakers - Definitive Technology BP2000TL (FL, FR), C/L/R 3000(FC), BP2002 (SL, SR), BPVX (RSL, RSR), & 4 new Yamaha NS-IC800 ceiling speakers for ATMOS (installation underway). The Def Tech Front, Center and Side speakers all have built in subs (FL, FR =15"@500 Watt x 2, CLR = 10" @ 150 Watts x1, SL, SR = 12" @300 Watts x2) also a Standalone Velodyne ULD-18" Down firing Sub @ 400 Watts Continuous Servo control Remote amp Frequency response: 18Hz–85Hz, ±3dB; 104dB at 20Hz with less than 0.5% THD.
I'll put his listing and other stuff I use in the correct place in future posts - Anyway I have 2 tape Decks an Onkyo 3 head Cassette and my recently restored/rebuilt & calibrated (by me) Otari MX-5050 BII-2 (2 track / Record, Reproduce & 4 Track Play only) Professional Reel to Reel (7.5 & 15 IPS, 3.75 IPS capable) EQ switchable for NAB & IEC bias 3 levels each, XLR Balanced inputs and Outputs, 2 channel, with 2 microphone & 2 line inputs w/ level mixers on record inputs.
Question - I was wondering how to connect the tape decks (or at least the Otari reel to reel deck) specifically the tape monitor input? So the deck is looking for a line level input that follows the "source" directed to main Left/Right Stereo Channels.
1) I assume I can use the RMC-1's XLR balanced analog inputs for the Tape out connection (modifying XLR cables to emulate Otari's reversed pin 2 and 3 on one end for both channels). 2) I know Emotiva has eliminated the tape monitor loop it had in the XMC-1. I was looking at using a "Y" XLR cable on Front Left & Front Right main out (to Amp) and sending those to tape monitor input - I know this is not a loop & in order for me to compare source to tape I would have to use headphones on the Otari and use it's tape/source switch to hear source directed to main speakers & tape monitor input via "Y" cable vs tape output via headphones plugged into deck - certainly not convenient nor ideal not to mention the only way to get true end to end analog would be to record/listen in the RMC-1 "Reference Stereo" mode or worst case, "Direct mode" if I have to for some reason not yet understood. 3) The only other way I could think of is to use the RMC-1's Main 2 RCA unbalanced output, have that follow whatever analog input I am using for SOURCE material I am recording from - lets say a turntable (using the SP-1 turntable preamp plugged into 1st analog unbalanced input on RMC-1), plug Tape monitor input from Otari into Main 2 output using XLR to RCA cables (reversing pin 2 & 3 on XLR side to compensate for Otari's non-standard wiring), then using Otari's balanced XLR output to RMC-1 XLR inputs (again reversing pin 2 & 3 on one end), using standard XLR to Amp connections on Main F/L & F/R channels to amp and setting Main 1 to output Otari Tape deck. So the source (turntable thru RMC) is connected to Main 2 thru Tape Deck output to RMC XLR input which is directed to Main 1 left & Right fronts output to power amp. Using Tape Deck's Source/Tape switch I should be able to compare and adjust the source (turntable output) to the Recorded Tape output at least on a line level basis using the tape decks line in, line out (VU meters) level controls and the decks other calibration, tape formula EQ, etc... controls. If I set RMC as "Reference Stereo" I should have all analog to analog un-altered signal although I am not yet sure I understand if I have to use the "Direct Mode" setting to achieve this kind of internal "switching" of input/output ports to do what I am trying to do as explained above. Of course if I am having to use a setting that is sending my analog signal thru a DAC - then all bets are off connecting tape decks or turntables to the Emotiva as their Primary Preamp source (I may use the outputs of these analog devices only thru the Emotiva because......
*** Will Option 3 work?
4) Not to muddy the waters - I read that ANALOG PURISTS have purchased the XSP-1 Preamp/Processor as their primary ANALOG Preamp and added on the XMC or RMC Processors for their home theaters sharing the XPA "X" Gen 3 Multi-channel amps with both preamps - I did purchase the Stealth SP-1 primarily for the built in XPS-1 Phono preamp & the bonus extra analog inputs (and some other features specifically designed to pair with the Emotiva DC-1 that I DO NOT OWN, but the SP-1 was same CLEARANCE price as the XPS-1 Phone Preamp only, so why not? - needed a phono preamp anyway). BUT MY POINT IS - I am also going to set up an analog Rack - using a HEathkit AA-100 50 Watt/channel Tube Integrated Amp with tube preamp for all line stages including a tube based phone preamp and 2 tape monitor loops, also a Heathkit Tube based Tuner (separate) - AR 3A speakers, a Graphic Equalizer and the 2 tape decks, turntable I mentioned above and a second older Oppo disc player with the upgraded DAC & Stereo Analog audiophile Hi-Fi output stage that Oppo does so well. So why am I bothering you about RMC-1 connectivity? Well the Heathkit equipment needs a cap job and other restoration/ upgrades (I restore old Vacuum Tube amps, guitar and hi-fi and older hi-fi solid state high end turntables/tape decks, amps receivers etc.. and since these I own - they are at bottom of my list after customer repairs - so it may take another few months until I get around to fixing my personal equipment (like the Otari that I finished last month)... So I figured if I could at least get my turntable (vintage Empire 598 Gold tone - needs some restoration) & Otari up and running - I would be good to go..

There is much to love about a two track master tape at 15ips. If you never heard a master tape at 15ips, it is an amazing treat. Can get expensive but that is part of the deal. Otari, Studer, Tascam/TEAC,Technics and more. It is a great listen.
