I’ve pulled my 3 channel DR from the HT just to try it out in my small 2 channel 13’ by 9’6” 8’ height listening space and like what I hear. Streaming tidal with MacBook Pro > modi bit > Yamaha cx 1000. I was gonna buy an emotiva preamp but now I want a tube pre, I have about 2,000 set aside for one, balanced connections a must! What is a good match for one of these amps? I plan on buying two monoblocks dr models in the future.

I don’t have a lot of experience with stereo preamps, but I do own a tubed pre for my two channel listening. It’s a Schiit Freya+, and I’m extremely pleased with it. Prior to this I’ve had receivers or prepros. Never a stereo pre. This thing definitely beats any of them by a mile. It’s used in system with two DR1s and a pair of Maggie speakers. The Freya+ is $900 so you would even have some fun money leftover if decide to go with one. Oh, and yes it has balanced input and output. Good luck in your search.

A lot of people like the Schiit Freya +. and it's the best value in a balanced tube preamp.
Why is balanced a must?

I think I’m gonna buy the recommended tube pre. Read a lot of pos reviews, didn’t look for neg ones but none came up. I think it’ll work good, almost bought a used xps 1, it sold on eBay for 600 gen 1. There was a gen 2 for 900 and the guy said he paid 900 for a factory repair at emo! Find that hard to believe.

And that’s right I have a balanced amp and it’ll be 10’ away from the pre.

I own the Freya+, and it definitely adds a nice tube sound to the DR1s. It’s easy to verify because it also has passive mode and non tube gain stage to compare against.

Well I bought one, could be on back order though. Have money left over for my pagoda dac or DR’1s fund. I will also buy an emo pre in the future! Thanks fellows for helping me spend my money.

I’m looking at purchasing some infinity rs2’b and am planning ahead, one day I’ll need two power amps and not necessarily mono blocks, the rs 2b does well with a tube amp for the highs and ss for the lows, This Freya plus hasn’t shipped yet, I won’t be able to use two 2 channel amps with it right?

Just came across your post today and have a question for you? Before getting your DR1s did you have anything else driving your Maggies? I'm thinking about going from and XPA-2 Gen2 feeding 1.7is two DR1s. If you did have something else driving your Maggies what was it and what differences do you hear with DR1s? Thanks

I bought a freya plus as recommended and it lasted a week before the volume control messed up, acted like it needed to be deoxited you know. It quit altogether on me, Nevertheless I Sent it back and two months later I have it back repaired. It sounds amazing, in tube mode I have some volume, in the other modes I have to have the volume turned up over half way just to hear it? It was like that when I first got it! Does yours do that? Are they all like this? I do Have a gain switch on the amps and have them On there higher setting.

I don't know if I mentioned it but I bought two monoblocks to drive the kappas, that's what it takes. Bryston's 7bsst2 locally from a fellow who has many 10s of thousands of dollars of gear, It was unbelievable what I seen at his house. Either way those amps are paired with the freya plus and some balanced cables, and only a schiit dac and my MacBook Pro.
