I did the graphics myself for my first two books, but on my current one, I've hired an engineer to do graphics for me. There will be about 20 chapters with about 12 to 15 graphics per chapter (simple illustrations, not artistic or creative work).
I'm currently in negotiations with my graphics artist for reimbursement for the graphics. She's proposed a percentage of royalties instead of a "per graphic" payment. I'm agreeable to this, but, not having dealt with the situation before, am not sure what an appropriate percentage would be. Can anyone here advise me?
Thanks - Boomzilla

This is usually a deal controlled by your publisher. My wife has done artwork for several books, and her contract was always with the publisher never the author.

Normally, yes, but this is specialty work, and I've independently contracted the engineer at the recommendation of the publisher.

OK. Diane says she is normally paid a fee for the limited use of her art plus a royalty based on number printings. -edit - The number of printings AND the number of downloads. She told me to add that.

Tell her thanks VERY kindly! That’s most helpful.

I'm currently beginning to co-author a short e-book. Fortunately, my co-author runs a company with ~100 employees, and they have some folks very good with graphics as part of their normal business - so he's going to have them help with "the look" aspects.
