Hi all,
Saw a You Tube video from Audioholics for unboxing and set up for the Polk L800 Legend speakers and they say as a foot note that these speakers are not compatible with "Balanced" or "Differential" amplifiers? Just wondering if the above as per title would be compatible as if I upgrade my amplifier and then the speakers I don't want to have a power amp that's not compatible.
All advice appreciated - thanks in advance.
Regards - Gaz from down under.

The Polk L800 speakers use a two-wire connection BETWEEN THE LEFT AND RIGHT SPEAKER. This strongly suggests that they are probably not compatible with a fully differential fully balanced amplifier. (We don't know exactly what circuitry they have inside... but MOST circuitry utilizing this sort of connection would NOT be compatible.)
Interestingly, however, the current Polk manual does not include warnings against using them with a fully differential amplifier.
(I don't know where Audioholics got their information...) (I would also note that this is the sort of thing that could change with different versions over the life of the product.)
The bottom line is that I would assume it is NOT a good idea... unless Polk SPECIFICALLY tells you otherwise...

Hi Keith and thanks for the information. Here is the clip from Audioholics - youtu.be/6MLgmBm-LtE- Go to the 13:00 minute mark and that's where they mention balanced etc. Would my current XPA2 (Series 1) make these function to specification then? I'll follow up with Polk too - really wanted those DR amps!

Sounds like a redo of the Polk SDA from a couple decades ago. Or even the CARVER Sonic Holocaust, this time done at speaker level, not at line or preamp level.
The idea is that in a normal recording situaiton, you can't 100% isolate RIGHT from LEFT. If you can subtract the bleed over TO the left by the right and the reverse, you get a cleaner stereo......Or at least that's the idea.
