This should work for you. I have an iMac Air that is in the same boat and I use Apple's answer to that and it works well.

Could not readily find it in the manual... the Dirac external box- is it needed when you are done calibrating? Can it be unplugged until it is needed again? Thanks

I have an HP Chromebook which doesn't run Windows 10. However, I found a website www.digitaltrends.com/computing/how-to-install-windows-chromebook/#:~:text=Method%201%3A%20Free%20Online%20Apps.%201%20Step%201,to%20start%20using%20it.%20Take%20note%20...%20 that allows my desktop PC (which does have windows 10 ) to 'share' with my Chromebook laptop. I have installed the app and now share the 2 computers. I must use my Chromebook to connect to the microphone in my home theater, located 75' away on another level from my office PC. Should I go ahead and download the Dirac to this shared system? Presently the 2 computers are connected via WiFy, but I have an ethernet cable ordered to use when the Dirac is run.

It'll be a miracle if it works. You can try it and see. I must admit that I'm not certain what your arrangement is exactly. The mic needs to be attached to the computer that has Dirac running on it. That computer must be on the same segment of network as the RMC-1/XMC-2 (we're calling these G3P (Gen 3 Processors)), and the computer can use wifi. So the G3P doesn't need to be physically near the computer running Dirac. It kinda sounds like the Chromebook will not be running Dirac but will have the mic connected to it, correct? If this is the case, then the PC must see the Chromebook as an interface for the mic. This will be interesting.

I’ll echo ttocs sentiment, not likely. If it were something like Remote Desktop and the Windows machine saw the microphone...maybe. Installing won’t hurt, you can always uninstall. Another possibility would be a 75’ XLR cable to extend the mic to the Windows machine, and then you’re Remote Desktop thing might work. For others, several questions about the EDNIB/LBB have been answered in the FAQ, found in the 3rd post.

Could not readily find it in the manual... the Dirac external box- is it needed when you are done calibrating? Can it be unplugged until it is needed again? Thanks Mel Once the DIRAC software uploads the filters to your RMC-1L, you will disable "Dirac Live" in the "Speaker Preset", once this is done you won't need the EDNIB until the next time you want to run Dirac. I personally just leave my EDNIB connected to my network switch and disconnect its power.

If the mic is truly low impedance, as most with an XLR connector are, then extending the XLR portion would be the right way to do it (and 75’ for an XLR balanced cable is not unreasonable).

I took a quick look....
It looks to me like they're talking about using the Chromebook as a sort of remote desktop to control the Windows 10 machine. This kind of suggests that the microphone would still have to be physically connected to the Windows 10 machine. I'm also doubting that this could be made to do what you want... but I suppose it couldn't hurt to try.
(They also mentioned possible issues with latency... which might cause issues when taking measurements.)

Absolutely... With ANY room correction system, you want to START with the best possible room layout, and speaker positions, and even perhaps room treatments. Dirac Live will then do its best to optimize your system as it finds it when you run the software. However - Dirac Live DOES NOT give advice about where to put your speakers or how to set up your room.
So we are very close to having Dirac now for the RMC-1L. This is good news. I bought mine in November 2019. I've literally left my speakers just laying sideways on the floor the entire time so that way when I get Dirac I will align everything and then I get a better improvement on quality. I can't think of any reason not to set your speakers up the best you can now without Dirac- distance from walls/each other/angles/etc.- and then run Dirac when you have it. Dirac is frosting on the cake. But you need to bake the cake first.

Thanks for the reply's. I'll be ordering enough Ethernet cable to get there. I may look into the WiFi adapter when the Emo App is working properly. I would like to distinguish between KeithL 's suggestion to buy "100' Ethernet Cable", and Hair Nick 's suggestion to buy a "spool" of cable. In the first case you are buying a long CAT 6 cable with CAT 6 RJ45 connectors on each end, that were professionally installed. All you have to do is route the cable, plug one end into the G3P, and the other into a switch or router. In the second case you are buying bulk cable, presumably to route through walls, ceiling, crawl space, etc, and which you have to terminate. This might be with the RJ45's mentioned, or maybe a patch panel on one end and a Keystone RJ45 on the other. The point being the 2nd option requires much more skill, and unless you have done it before or have training, may be easy to 'mess up' and you might want a professional installer. If you plan to do it yourself, and don't have experience (and proper tools), I would recommend the prebuilt CAT6 cable. Edit: For the record, the CAT5/6 spec for length is 100 Meters or about 330 Feet. While I wouldn't suggest "pushing it" you could buy a cable up to this length to go directly from a device (like the G3P) to a Ethernet Switch. As with most cabling it's best to use the shortest cable that will do the job, but then again, one that's just a little too short doesn't help much. As a professional cabler who started before the 'cat4' standard was certified..and before Pro-Logic. I agree, if you don't have to tools just buy a premade cat5e or cat6 cable. If you want to run a premade through walls and to a plate, you can buy Cat6 through adapters that clip into a wall plate, so the premade cable plugs into the back of the wall plate at each ends and then you use short patch leads from there.. I am not a fan of the through adaptors, but that's only cause I have the tools. A wall plate with hole or brushes would work too, just bring the premade cable through. A few points though. The limit for Cat5e/Cat6 is 100mt (330ft) for solid cable, premade cables are usually stranded cable and are limited to 30mt (~100ft). This is because stranded cable has more attenuation and won't go the distance. (it's actually 90mt wall point to point and 6mt for stranded patch cables) I am in Australia, in the US there are different codes to the type of cable you can run in ceiling and wall spaces.. Not sure how this might effect things. Anywho, this is so off topic to Dirac, but so relevant to getting the Dirac Box.. It's it worth it's own thread?

Since the interface box is a raspberry pi I was wondering if it is possible to post a sd card image for those of us that have a raspberry pi and know how to drop a image on to a sd card? Would have to have the correct raspberry pi I get that but just a idea.

The Dirac license is tied to the processor (RMC1, XMC-2, RMC1L) so shouldn't be a issue. My guess is they don't want to deal with supporting people doing this on their own. Sure people would be calling I can't flash my sd card, I bought the wrong pi etc. I kind of see their side of not doing it but would be nice if they released a image and what pi we need and just say they don't support it... I absolutely understand why they don't want it occurring. I guess my real point is... What can they do about it? That isn't meant to be a negative statement, but if you can't stop... Don't sweat it. On that note though, there is a strong possibility that the license is tied to a combination of the MAC from the G3P and the EDNIB, so... This would actually prevent it from working. From what I understand it is the Mac address of your processor run through a code generator and then loaded into the Dirac servers. The EDNIB has nothing to do with the licensing.

Most avrs/prpcessors just write the filters directly without any additional hardware. I appreciate Emo's code and hardware strategy, but really the box is superfluous and we should be allowed to diy. I do see the problems with ppl clamouring for support. They can make as many disclaimers as they want, but can't stop ppl bitching on forums about how bad and unhelpful the company us. "I know they said its not supoorted, but i only had a little query. This js unacceptable for a reputable company etc etc." Or "how can they release something and not support it. Rubbish company...." Of course, if a forum member were to rip the image and share it...

The EDNIB has nothing to do with the licensing. think about that for a minute... The EDNIB is what is talking to Dirac. I believe only the Laptop running Dirac Live is talking to the Dirac servers, but am not sure of that. In any case, if the EDNIB was part of the license key it would be a logistical nightmare, like geebo I’m pretty sure only the MAC is involved in the license key.

Anybody in the know, Keith, anyone. When will the next batch of Dirac kits go out? Mine is saying unfulfilled. I got the email but it hasn't shipped yet apparently. Just wondering how long I may have to wait. I am losing my mind over here. I actually got out of the hobby all together for a while because of this. I didn't want to complain like a lot of others so I sold everything and mostly lost interest. Then I bought everything again and have been waiting patiently. I am about out of patients. Please help me. Ron I didn’t want to throw a wet blanket on yesterday’s excitement of kits shipping, but now I’d like to request that discussion and questions about ‘getting’ the EDNIB kit — when will it ship? where will it ship? how long did it take to get there? what about the EU, Canada, Australia? — be moved to Hair Nick ’s ‘Success at Last’ thread (linked below). Nick and his team are best suited to answer these questions, though they’re busy getting kits out so don’t expect answers all the time. In any case I pledged to keep this thread technical and hope everyone understands this request. Please continue discussion of Dirac workings here, including the function of the EDNIB. Thanks for your understanding and carry on with the good Dirac talk! >>> Hair Nick’s Dirac, Success at Last thread <<<
