Boomzilla I enjoyed the review. I've always loved the sound of Maggies. I look forward to having a room where I can have them again.

Hey Boom -
I will eventually. We're down in NZ now, so it will be a bit of a waiting game. I'm enjoying some KEF LS50 Wireless as my near field work monitors.
They were a speaker I'd always wanted to have and listen to - with a 10" sub, they have met every expectation as near field listening while working.
Not my 3.6's - but still can take your breath away.
I've been enjoying catching your reviews.

Thanks kindly GreenKiwi. Writing audio reviews is interesting. I wrote one recently that was only lukewarm on the item. The manufacturer asked that another reviewer redo the review (in hopes of getting a more favorable writeup). Doesn't bother me. I write what I hear & whether or not it gets published, I get paid. So if anyone ever tells you that audio reviews are always breathless hype, it ain't so... Boom

I think that speaks poorly of the publication. If a company sends their equipment for review then they ought to accept that review, with the publication allowing them to respond if they wish. But a manufacturer should not be able to make the request like what they did in your case. You send your equipment, you should let it be reviewed.

I'd tend to disagree. I've had a LOT of reviews published that definitely were "mixed bags." I'll also be the first to admit that some of my reviews didn't get the best that the review equipment had to offer (for one reason or another). Things I've learned the hard way during reviewing:
DAC reviews - Listen to the internet. If everyone says that a specific DAC sounds better in one of its modes than it does in its other umpteen modes (including the default mode), then maybe they're right. At least listen to all the options that the DAC offers and then decide which one you prefer.
Speaker reviews - Listen to the internet. If everyone says that a specific speaker isn't broken in until after a month of service, then don't write the review after the first week of listening.
Amplifier reviews - If you don't challenge the amplifier, then you can't assume that what it sounded like at <1 watt into an 8-ohm speaker is what it's going to sound like at higher volumes into low impedance speakers. To "gut-check" the amp, you've got to stress it.
So over time, I think that I've become a better reviewer. Perhaps I'm fooling myself in thinking so, but from the beginning, I've written what I hear - and I still do.
