Multiple criteria for consideration:
1. Compact size (rules out any driver sizes greater than 10", and 8" is preferable) 2. Extended high frequency response (would like to get usable response to 200 Hz. even though the anticipated crossover frequency is to be 100 Hz.) 3. Flat frequency response (ideally as flat as possible from 30 to 200 Hz.) 4. Sealed enclosure (allows for smoother bass roll-off and also allows some equalization, although if the other criteria can be met in a non-resonant, ported enclosure, then that will be fine so long as transient response is excellent) 5. Low distortion 6. Reasonable price (would like to stay at or below $500) 7. Front-firing only (subs will be elevated, and downward firing units won't work)
Qualities NOT required:
1. High output (these are to be used near-field and need not pressurize the room at all) 2. Special finish - flat black will be fine for these 3. HT usage (these will be for music ONLY) 4. Built in plate amp (although if the sub comes with one, fine)
Now knowing what's desired, how does one go about searching for credible candidates? There are a LOT of subwoofer manufacturers, and NONE of them post the same specifications (if they post any at all). The most critical spec is that this is to be a sub pair for MUSIC, and NOT for home theater. Would servo-feedback be desirable? How does one weed out the unsuitable candidates?
Thanks - Boomzilla

Rythmik L12 and SVS SB1000 = maybe too large (looking for an 8" or 10" driver), but I'll put them in the hopper anyway on y'all's recommendation. Thanks.

“Qualities NOT required“
I would dump those whilst shopping.

Three choices, two are 14" cubes and the one is 15" cube, all 10" drivers with different power specs, all are ported though I believe they are not meant for extreme low bone rattling bass but a smoother response, if you read up on them they are the same design as some more expensive sub offered a few years back by a well known subwoofer designer, I read a bit about them, I know more about them because I follow Chane from owning their A5rx-c towers a few years back which i really liked btw. www.chanemusiccinema.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=229Updated I was wrong they are all 10" drivers Chad

See DYohn, I told you it wouldn't be long before he would do a 180. Again.

I know this is not exacting to the criteria but what about the Airmotiv S8 or S12? They are only rated down to 33hz and 24hz respectively which is perfect for music only. Although they are downward firing.

Boom, another vote for the L12, if you can/want live with the bigger size. The L12 is one of the most compact 12" subs, by the way, and it sounds great for music. Rythmik also make this: www.rythmikaudio.com/FM8.htmlA bit unconventional and more expensive than your target. However, you keep using the plural. If you are looking for two smaller subs, would this dual 8" be a suitable alternative?

Go for a Rythmik F25...bigger than you want, but you can use it as an end table. Or, dining room table for 2 if you like. LOL!
How about those Emotiva S8's?

I would also look into Ob Audio. For a small room they are pretty good. They pop on ebay once in a while. That is what I use for my second system. I think they still have 30 day in home trial.

They (subwoofers) ARE a giant PITA. How do I hate thee, let me count the ways... I hate thee for thy imprudent expense I hate thee for thy butt-ughly black finish I hate thee for thy difficulty of placement I hate thee for thy difficulty of inaudible blend with the main speakers I hate thee for thy mandate of additional crossover electronics in the signal chain I hate thee for thy nastily-peaked frequency response And I hate thee for thy additional wiring requirements (power AND signal). And despite my frustration with the damned things, sometimes (particularly in smaller rooms) they offer more flexibility than having full-range speakers ( hometheaterhifi.com/editorial/oped/full-range-speaker-systems-vs-satellite-subwoofer-combinations/ ). So therefore, despite my fervent wish never to have even seen or even heard of a subwoofer, I am reluctantly drawn, kicking and screaming, in their loathsome direction. And so, rbk123, you are fully justified in your "I told you so." Sigh...
