Hi folks,
Would there be any advantage to powering my M&K V76 sub which is 75w using a PA-1? There are high level inputs for connection to an amp. I was wondering if this might be a cheap way to upgrade an old sub?
I'm thinking there maybe sonic advantage for the sub to use the same style amp as the rest of my speakers - but mainly for bass management duties rather than LFE.

My sub sounds definitely better with a quality amp (XPA-100) powering it, particularly for music.
Cheers Gary

You could do it with a PA-1, but I'd recommend a Crown DC-300 instead - or an Electron Kinetics Eagle 2a.

Both the amps I suggested are exceptional at bass control and have much lower output impedance than the PA-1. But don't take my word for it. The DC-300, in particular, is dirt cheap on the used market. Buy one for peanuts and try it out. If you don't like it, you can sell it for what you paid for it. I think that there will be audible improvements with the old Crown.

I am with Boomzilla on this. Pro amps from Crown and the like are made to drive 1 or 2 ohms all day, all night, all the time as it was designed for it. The PA-1 can do it but with the low impedance a Subwoofer may throw at the amp load wise possibly could be problematic. With Amps made to live at these low impedances all the time. It is no issue at all.

Hi folks, There are high level inputs for connection to an amp. Are you talking about using the high level input to power your sub with an external amp? I don't think that's what it does.... unless I'm mistaken.

I have my first sub still, though not in use, and it's an un-powered "no-name" sub supplied by my high end dealer with a choice of amps at the time. I chose to use a stereo Rotel amp in bridged mode at the time (which I also still have, boxed up), but was wondering if I decided to use my old sub again if a PA-1 might be a good choice to power it. The sub is efficient; after retiring the Rotel, I ran it off one blade in my MPS-2. The sub is a 10" cone, but in a large cabinet, 17-18 inches each side, and light oak wood. I suspect part of the efficiency is from the size of the cabinet vs. the cone.
