Think the new re-design is a mess to be honest. No matching Power Button that is on ALL Emo gear and then trying to match it to the ERC-1 instead of the USP-1 as it looks like it was originally designed is ill conceived if you ask me as surely the TRUE market for this DAC (I'd have thought) would be for a computer/amp/pre-amp (USP-1) or combinations thereof as opposed to the ERC-1 where it will apparently provide improvement on the DAC within the ERC-1, which, by all accounts, is already very good. Just my opinion of course.

I would also have to say the original design looks better IMO. Maybe a stupid question but will the XDA-1 have a remote (volume and inputs)?

Bill Bill, according to Lonnie, yes, somewhere earlier in the 600 pages of this thread. We'll be updating the XDA-1 page over at Emonatics to keep up with the latest information from Emotiva. Except for photos, it's pretty up to date now.

I could get 3 XDA's: One standalone for the computer, one on top of a UPA-2, and one on top of a XMC-1. For me, the ERC-1, or any CD player for that mater, is a relic. I convert CDs into FLAC files and add them to a playlist on my computer. So for my use cases, making the design of the XDA-1 match the ERC-1 is not useful. That said, either design is nice. Although I miss the center E power button, moving the display to the center has its own advantages.

Seriously, do any of you guys know if the headphone output is the same as the USP-1, or has it been redesigned? John

I'm sure it works great though. Especially after they decided to redesign it to better match the rest of the gear. One would think that having the same power button on the front would really help match the rest of the gear. Not to mention, how useful and functional it would be.

Will it be iPod friendly and receive a digital signal?

Yes, ^ i beleive that is exactly what it is for....digital signals only. Yes, but will it be iPod friendly. By that I mean will it bypass the iPod DAC to receive the signal digitally. Almost every thing else on the market can only receive an analog signal from the iPod. Cheers.

This depends more on your transport for the iPod. Look at something such as the Wadia.

I was hoping the Emotiva DAC would have the required Apple compliance to connect in the same way as the Wadia.

I was hoping the Emotiva DAC would have the required Apple compliance to connect in the same way as the Wadia. Nope. Good. No need to bump the price up when something like a Wadia iTransport would be better. A DAC is typically about audio only. The typical iPod dock has much more: charge, video, control (remote). Given iPod dock obsolescence, I would rather that the dock be separate from the DAC, just as I prefer the processor/preamp to be separate from the amp. Connect the iTransport's digital out to a XDA-1 and you have a great combination.

This is a shortfall concidering the iPod can connect to other brand receivers, car audio and even the Fusion stereo in my boat. I do not see this as a shortfall in the least. The only product I'm familiar with that can extract just the digital signal fom an iPod is the Wadia 170. Onkyo had introduced a dock the ND-S1 as well but I have not seen that it has been released. With the Wadia you would still want to use a quality DAC such as the XDA-1 after it. This is more of an iPod/Apple licensing issue more than anything else. There are plenty iPod docks out there as you mention but none of them bypass the DAC in the iPod as the Wadia or the Onkyo (if released) does. That being if I missed newer docks similar to the Wadia . www.eu.onkyo.com/press/press_release_en_8599729.htmlBill

I keep seeing the Wadia discussed in these threads, but for the life of me I just can't understand why. The Apple TV has digital out and a far better control system (wireless iPod Touch). I'd hate to see you guys waste your money on a dock.

I'd hate to see you guys waste your money on a dock. The closed, proprietary nature of the box turns some people off. The "better" control system is also a matter of personal preference, and it raises the entry cost $200-400. That's a min. of $500, roughly what I built my HTPC for, and $120 more than the Wadia.
