I have an RMC-1 with Emotiva speakers, including two S12 subwoofers, configured as center=mono and left/right=dual mono. Subwoofers are connected using the rca left input, mode auto. All knobs are roughly centered. The test tones are audible on both (as low rumbles). But I don't hear much from them during videos that one would think would have some serious bass. DD 5.1 DVD, for example. And every so often they make a sound like a burp. What could be going on?

If so, turn them to on instead. This normally isn't an issue with processors putting out good voltage, but I've read many ppl having issues where the voltage wasn't enough to turn on the amps. I believe the amp gain can have something to do with it as well. Maybe crank those all the way up to make sure "something" is working as expected and go from there. The other comments I have are: Do you have your speakers set to small which engages bass management? Do you have the left and right sub enabled in the menu? I may be mistaken on this, but I believe you want those in dual mono.

No only needs to be Dual Mono if they are both connected to the Left/Right Subs output.
Have you got one sub connected to the centre and one sub connected to the left only sub output? If you have it connected to the right it wont work.
And if you have it connected like this then the sub connected to the left ouptut should be set to Mon and not dual mono.
One thing I have noticed is that when two subs are connected and both set to mono or mono and dual mono the overall gain drops compared to having just one sub connected.

Re-reading the manual, I found that Dual/Mono is only for use of both left and right so I changed that. I'm only using the left and center, so I set them both to Mono. Tried switching the speakers to ON instead of Auto. Seems to be working better now. Still pretty weak though. You'd think a 12" speaker in front and one on the bottom would rock the room when there are explosions happening in the video.
I have yet to try the Dirac setup. Just tweaking things manually. Lots to tweak!
It would really help if the manual(s) showed some typical connection diagrams showing an RMC-1 and XPA's. They are strangely absent. For example, I have allowed for a 13.2 setup (lcr, 6 Atmos, 2 surround, 2 back, 2 subs, not using the other 2), but currently only have 5.2 installed. The surrounds are currently actually in the back of the room, so would really be the BACK speakers in a 7.2 setup. But I used the left and right surround outputs until I have the other speakers. Think that's OK, but hard to tell from the manual. But also, when using XLR connectors, how are they wired? 1 to earth gnd, 2/3 to the balanced +/-? Which are connected when you use the XLR-RCA adapter? Hopefully 1 and 3 are the ground side and 2 is the hot side. And when they specify "distance" in the setup, is that distance to the listening sweet spot? They never say! What does that setting actually DO? And if using AirMotiv surrounds, are they considered "small" or "large"?

Found that the signal source sometimes does not appear to get decoded properly. Sometimes the surround speakers have what you'd expect, sometimes just hum. Source is a DVD (Battlestar Galactica series) that shows up as dts hd MA 5.1. Weird.

In no particular order, this is what I do; In a 5.1 (or 5.2) set up I use LF, C, RF, SL and SR (not the backs, they are off, not present) Set the input volumes from all of the sources without any boost (or cut). Set the distances from each speaker's tweeter to the ears in the captain's chair. Use a noise meter to set the volume of each channel equally (it is not unusual for the sub woofer to need more gain that the other channels). Set the 5 speakers to small. Set the cross over to, say, 70 hz. That way anything under 70 hz goes to the sub woofer instead of the 5 channels (I use the 24 db slope). That doesn't affect the LFE channel in a movie, whatever the sound mixer coded to the LFE channel goes to the LFE channel. Then play a movie that you know well with only 1 x sub woofer plugged in, and listen closely. Commonly I need to boost the centre channel a couple of DB, and the sub woofer a bit more, maybe 3 db. If happy with the balance then plug the second sub woofer in and listen closely. Commonly I can turn the LFE channel back down that 3 DB that I added with the 1 x sub woofer. I strongly suggest watching the Home Theatre tutorials emotiva.com/pages/how-tosCheers Gary

Thanks Gary. One other detail I observed when watching BSG videos: The beginning of each video has a "Universal" logo and fine-sounding audio, shown as PCM 5.1. Then, when the video actually starts, the mode changes to dts MA 5.1. This often results in no audio from the surrounds except for some hum. If I go into the video setup in the DVD and change the format to something else then back again, it seems to clear it up and the RMC-1 decodes it correctly. So it could be the cheap DVD player. But I still find that my surround speakers and subs need about 10dB of increase to sound like they are even there. Just wouldn't have expected to have to boost everything so much. But I'll keep experimenting.
