Any difference between XPA-1L gen 1 and XPA-1L gen 2?
Would it be a good idea mixing gen 1 and gen 2 monoblocks?

Well first I don't think the HC-1 is a good replacement. You will be losing the fully balanced signal of the XPA-1 L. The XPA-1 L gen 1 and 2 can be mixed together. I'm not sure if one is silver trim vs black trim. The very early part of the XPA-1 L gen 1 releases had some issues specifically involving class A bias and there were some reports of weird sound coming out when paired with power conditioners. But barring malfunction, in terms of the actual sound, they are more or less the same.

If you had the choice to choose between a pair of used XPA-1 Gen 2 or a pair of new XPA-DR1 Gen 3 monoblocks (ignoring pricing differences), which would you go for?

So it wouldn’t be a knowledgeable comparison. But if I was given the choice at this very moment, I would choose the XPA-1 gen 2 with no hesitation. There’s nothing about the sound quality of this amp that is short of excellent

Second XPA-1L just started showing the same symptoms of losing audio occasionally and getting exceedingly hot. Good thing I moved on to the XPA-1 Gen 2, just hoping it would last longer.

Obedia,
Steve in the Emotiva Repair Department. Looking over your thread and the symptoms you mention, I would make a repair suggestion:
Have your tech replace Relay JDQ9 (the larger of the two relays in middle of power amp board).
(the way to verify if this is the failing part; have them inject a super low voltage into the input (100uV) and monitor output on oscilloscope. While watching sine wave on scope, tap the top of the relay. If signal drops out by tapping on relay, it needs replacement).
Hope this helps you!

What do you think of the XPA-1 gen 2? Also in case you missed the post above me, steve in emo repair has some suggestions.
