Lost power at 10pm. On generator now. 6 PM for us, are you still out? My transformer blew and repairs don’t look like they’ll be anytime soon. We’re the only house on it. It was hard looking out the window seeing everyone else with power and us on a generator. Time to fill it up. Flashback to Laura! 😕

I have discovered that my portable generator does NOT like being operated inside the big plastic box that it is stored in. Unless the storage box's lid and doors are open, the generator apparently overheats. When that happens, the governor loses speed control. When that happens, every surge suppressor in the house sounds like a machine gun! Fortunately, only one surge suppressor smoked, and I've already ordered another from Amazon.
But since I have now supplied the generator with adequate ventilation (all box doors left open), it seems to be chugging along fine. I am being gentle with it, using load-shedding to avoid taxing it too much. It will run the main air conditioner, the oven, and the microwave, the TV, and the computer plus all house lighting simultaneously without any complaint. I get about 12 hours from a 15 gallon tank of gasoline. I have about 100 gallons of gas in another plastic storage bin out in the back yard away from the house. Therefore, I should have about 80 hours of power until I need to buy more gas. So a bit over three days, and it's gasoline time again.
I looked into getting a fixed, whole-house generator with an automatic switch, but the vendor said they had such a backlog of work that they couldn't install it until December. Since I wanted the generator for this year's hurricane season, I just replaced my big portable.
When Entergy (our power company) might get the power restored is anyone's guess, but looking at their map, my entire subdivision is dark right now.

Seems like a lot of what I'm seeing on tv is wind and electrical damage. Are you and the others on the Lounge on high enough ground to avoid flooding?

Glad you caught it. The efficiency seems pretty good for how much you can power. My only experience with portable generators is for job site usage where a 2 circuit generator will get about 12-14 hours from 5 gallons of gas, but that's only with power tools, not continuous usage from anything like air-conditioning. Are you going to get a permanent generator installed in the off-season?

Glad you kept an eye on your generator and saved it from having a meltdown! They need to breathe to keep them cool and work more efficiently. Fresh air combusts better. My generator is running three window units tvs and whatever else. Looked at my panel this morning and found that the hot water heater is still on. Better generator then I thought! LOL My power company, CLECO has no idea when my power will be back on. My Restaraunt has a blown roof maybe all three are shot. Need to get the roofer up there.Im about to go clean up the drop ceiling and water from the floor. I don’t look forward to it but servpro et al are knee deep in flood jobs! No pun intended. Catch y’all later, back to clean up. Glad gour well Glen

I don't intend to install any permanent generator at this house. In fact, my plan after two more years, is to sell this house and move to another state more proximate to my only daughter, son-in-law, and grandson. If I thought that the price of purchase and installation would be fully recoverable, then I might go with a gas-fired, "whole-house," fixed-generator and an automatic switch. But I don't think that having the generator (or not) will affect the sale value of the property, so why spend the money?
It's turned out that the UPS for my wife's computer was also damaged by the generator last night. It is an older unit and about due for replacement anyway, so I don't begrudge the situation. My usual method of UPS replacement is to purchase a new unit and use it with the business system. The UPS that was previously on the business system migrates to my wife's computer, and the UPS that is no longer used on the wife's system goes to the local computer recycling store, where it gets repaired / refurbished and is either sold or donated to the local school system.
Fortunately, we have no roof or wind damage at all from this storm. We planted tall shrubs on all sides of the house in dual rows that act as wind-breaks during such storms. In fact in previous hurricanes, where every other house on my block had roof damage, our house was the only one that had the roof intact. I attribute it to the shrubs.

Power grid came back up @ 8pm yesterday. Total outage cost: 1 UPS, 1 surge suppressor strip, & 1 grouchy wife.

Power grid came back up @ 8pm yesterday. Total outage cost: 1 UPS, 1 surge suppressor strip, & 1 grouchy wife. You can easily replace the UPS and surge suppressor, but I doubt you'll be able to replace the grouchy wife. Not even the best insurance will cover you for that kind of damage. Mark
