Following this thread. I’ll soon be buying a DAC for a living room 2ch system mainly used for TV and movies plus music for entertaining or when cleaning house. NOT my main system. The TOPPING D50 looks like a great choice for this application (optical out from TV, connected to A100 amp). I initially was looking at Schiit, but this might be a better option. Any thoughts are appreciated.
Possibly off topic for this thread, but maybe the Schiit Modi at $99 is adequate here? Quality matters, but I also recognize 1) diminishing returns, and 2) the restraints of this system (bookshelf speakers on a mantle).

That's absolutely a consideration in this category. I'd consider it more of a pre-amp with a built in DAC... maybe a distinction without a real difference. I don't know about the OP, but I need small form so it's out for me. |

Any of the suggestions would excel. What I ended up with, however, was an Auralic Aries Mini (sometimes available used for between $300 & $400). It serves as a DAC, streamer, and remote-control digital preamp and it can be fitted with an internal HDD to minimize form factor. I haven't installed a SSD in mine yet, but plan to.
