Roon - 10 Things You Don't Know
I have been using Roon for several years and have a lifetime subscription.
When I meet fellow Audiophiles, I often ask whether they have tried various features in Roon. To my surprise, most have never used all the splendid features included with Roon. I am not sure why this is the case but it may be related to “discoverability” but there could be other factors.
For a while now I have been contemplating making a YouTube video that reveals some of these features that many seem to miss.
With today’s announcement about the next version of Roon, I am just in time with my video. Undoubtedly, I will have to follow up with another video once version 1.8 is releasd.
My video is my contribution to the Roon community. I am sure many of the experts here will know most of the things I talk about, but you may pick up a tip or two.

WOW is correct thanks for taking the time to make this video. Looking forward to ROON 1.8 . It would be nice to have a step by step video along with the new version. I hope it’s an easy install and all the bugs are worked out.

I don't know why - nor do I particularly care why - but my system sounds better after the Roon 1.8 upgrade. 1.8 is better sounding than 1.7.

Hmm..how is this possible when ROON is suppose to be a streaming manager where the software helps you MANAGE your music. I downloaded the new software without a hitch but will not have the opportunity to warm up the tubes until tomorrow or Saturday. Your statement has me curious but I personally do not think I will HEAR and improved sound. Then again everyone hears things differently therefore I am not saying your imagination is running away with you

Are you 1.8ers happy with it so far? I have been holding off on the update, I keep reading through the responses on the Roon forum because I am assuming you cannot roll back to 1.7 if you find you have issues with 1.8. The 1.7 has operated flawlessly for me and it makes me hesitant to upgrade.

Then again everyone hears things differently therefore I am not saying your imagination is running away with you Roon is much more than just a streaming manager, it shapes and handles the data packets using it's proprietary transport software called RAAT. So streaming from a Roon core to a Roon Ready player is different than streaming from a hard drive to a player via some other network protocol. I do not pretend to be able to explain why beyond this basic understanding, of course, but my guess is that the subtle differences I hear in Roon compaqred to LMS or DLNA streaming (and after upgrade to 1.8) are due to how it handles the data.

I've used it on all 4 of the zones I have set up with no issues.

I have never read anything about any sound improvement. What I can say about sound quality with ROON or any piece of physical equipment is that it is subjective. At the point I am at with my system I have come to a plateau. IMO humble opinion I believe my system is pristine! My taste in music has changed dramatically over the last 7years from rock and blues with a dash of jazz I find myself listening to more jazz than anything else...classical as well. I have invested as you djohn many hours in finding the HOLY GRAIL as well as money. ROON is the extra whip cream on the apple pie and I love the way it taste. I will find out this afternoon about how well ROON delivers and certainly if I do hear a musical improvement I will be back here to beat the drum louder for ROON advocates like yourself.

Yes. As in all things audio, whatever floats your boat, your mileage may vary, to each his own, and there is no one true holy grail.

I was able to listen to the SUPER DELUXE ABBEY ROAD album yesterday afternoon..exquisite! I never heard Abbey Road like that before.I heard ever nuance. The second part of the album is raw recordings of the boys and the music is clean and sweet which doing those songs naked puts a different taste in your ears . I highly recommend..if your a Fab Four Fan. Today I will give a listen to Chick Corea “Splendio Hotel” So here is where I am compared from with our different points of view on whether ROON sounds better. How can one distinguish between the quality of your equipment, ROON or a better mix in the recording studio? I have to listen more and perhaps give a listen to some jazz that I frequent. I have Oscar Peterson on TIDAL..”We Get Requests” .. I use this as my reference for jazz. I will get back to you if your interested as to my perhaps new take on ROON. Enjoy the weekend. Frank

Frank In my case it's by listening to the same tracks on the same gear just with different software (Roon VS LMS or Roon 1.7 vs 1.8) It's completely subjective, of course, and my opinion. But to me, that's all that matters! By the way, judging the sound of anything from an Internet streaming source is not wise in my opinion. Too many unknown variables out there, and you never get the same stream twice. Use local files and CDs.

Not A/Bing, as I got an automatic update last night to 1.8, but the update does seem to me more “foot tapping” than was 1.7.

I've been a Roon user for almost a year, and I signed up for a few reasons:
-Seamless integration of my library, Tidal and Qobuz -Convolution DSP engine for room correction -Rumored superiority of interface over streaming services directly
I'm rethinking Roon because:
-I rarely if ever listen to my library of ripped CDs, mostly blues and rock acquired many years ago before listening almost solely to jazz -The very well engineered tone controls in my McIntosh preamp adjust for source quality and room anomalies just fine to my ears -I really have to admit I experience no real advantage in Roon's user interface -I find that Roon "locks up" more often than the straight streaming services - and I have excellent internet speeds and wireless strength -I don't use Roon's multiroom capabilities
Thinking of just using native Qobuz and Tidal, for which I receive a 40% discount as a veteran.
Reactions?

My only reaction is you should do what works for you. That's all that matters!

Reactions? You always stir the pot audiobill. I like roon..I like the idea of utilizing the filter from REW into the ROONS CONVOLUTION there is a better low end, smoother bass response. The idea of comparing just TIDAL to ROON would be to turn off convolution. I have done this and can say I like having that filter in the mix. It is not overwhelming and it is not on all music applied BUT it is there and noticeable to me. My option would be a closer analysis of my room acoustics based on my already existing wall and ceiling difussers and sound absorption. Everything has a purpose and as you know all music to ones ears is subjective. For now ROONS a keeper.

Just a passing comment - I switched communication to my DAC from Ethernet to WiFi - And the sound IMPROVED! Surprised the heck out of me...
Try it!
