DC-1 Noise

I’m hearing noise from my DC-1 —> GR-1 headphones. I had previously only use the DC-1 with my stealth 8 monitors and hadn’t noticed any noise. I know very little about “noise”. How do I diagnose this?

A good start would be to detail the noise itself - and when and where it occurs...

What sort of noise is it?

Is it hum?

Or is it a sort of crackling noise?

Or something else?

Does it occur all the time or only when music is playing?

Or is it very quiet - and only noticeable when the music isn't playing?

Does it occur when only some music is playing?

Or does it occur only at certain times of day (or when a certain lamp is lit, or only when the A/C is on)?

And does everything sound OK except for the noise?

Or is there distortion involved as well?

Or is what we're talking about really distortion and not noise at all?

And you said you hadn't noticed it before?

Does that mean that it's still there with the speakers - but you don't notice it unless you put your ear up to the speaker?

Or does that mean that it ONLY comes form the headphone output?

I can tell you from personal experience that the headphone outputs on the DC-1 should be pretty quiet when connected to the GR-1's.

(But a tiny bit of hiss type background noise exists with all electronic devices - and may be more noticeable with headphones.)

It’s definitely not hiss. I can differentiate the noise by maxing the volume on the DC-1, resulting in the slightest of hiss. What I’m hearing doesn’t change amplitude regardless of input selection or volume 

I would not characterize it as hum either. I doesn’t have a flat frequency, if that makes sense. 

I imagine this will be a useless description, but it sounds dirtier than a hiss or hum. It doesn’t have color (white, brown, etc.). And here is where I hope you don’t roll your eyes...it sounds “electric”. 

It is audible at all times, whether or not music is playing. 

It’s very quiet, but just loud enough to be annoying.

Music still sounds good. There is no distortion that I can hear. 

I can’t connect to the monitors at this time to do an up close listen.

 Help me make sense of this. I just received the GL2000 Planar Magnetic headphones and there is no noise. GR-1 & Sennheiser HD8 have noise, but GL2000 and Etymotic ER4 do not?! I can’t make sense of it. 

I have a work order # for the DC-1 to get examined, but now I wonder if it can be solved from home (fat chance). What would the Ety and GL2000 have in common? Or different from the GR-1 & HD8? This is weird. 

I’ve tried all variations...different cords, outlets, standing on left foot, one eye open, sober/drunk, facing west, etc.
