Having 2 systems helps a lot. One is very forgiving and the other is analytical. Mood dictates

Better to have music you love played on crummy gear, than forcing yourself to listen to garbage just because it sounds good on your fancy gear. That's why NO POLKA or GREGORIAN CHANT on my system. Mexican NORTENO is also excluded because of the Accordion and Polka-like rhythm. I can handle OPERA for about 5 minutes at a time.

Even more fitting with the image of one of the ULTIMATE PSYCHOTICS of the screen.......Vincent Price!

This woman buys speakers and then looks for a house to fit. I think I'm in lust, that's my kind of woman. My priorities are 1) music, 2) the equipment, 3) the house and making it all work together. It's the only hobby left I can still do without waking up in the morning wishing I hadn't done that yesterday. And... it goes so good with a drink. lol edit- Live music or a great sound system? That's an unfair choice to make. Happy New Year, don't over-do-it or you won't enjoy the music in the morning.

I owned a set of Altec-Lansing A7 "Voice of the Theater" speakers in the 80's. They worked really well in the large family room of my house. Then a few years later I sold that house and the new place did not have a room large enough for the speakers, so i sold those too. Which helped pay for the new house.

VOT was a 'reference standard' for the Big Box / Low Power school of audio.
Might not have had or Needed more than 20 watts per speaker. At that? You could get yourself evicted from your CITY.
DY? How are you with Gregorian Chant?

How are you with Gregorian Chant? I powered mine with a Dynamo ST70, and also with a Sansui receiver for a while.

Sansui was depeending on model, an aspirational piece for me.
Stereo 70? a classic to this day and maybe the single most modified piece EVER.
At that time? You might have had MC or Heath or a few other choices. Even a KIT Dynaco.....
Maybe Audio Research? I don't know how far back THEY go.

Audio Research started as modders of Dynaco ST70s, and Conrad johnson, in 1979, jumped in when McIntosh exited the tube market in the ‘70’s. Until Mc reintroduced the MC275 around 1983.
Had them all, happiest overall where I am now.

According to the AR website? 1970 would be a banner year. Before that? Henry Kloss worked for Villchur in the 50s.....
I think the original Magnepan Tympani was sold under the AR banner in the later 70s.....

EVERYBODY....buys gear no matter what kind of a listener you are Except that some only care that it 'plays'. My wife, for example, in dealing with automobiles asks 2 questions. Does it start? Is it safe? My wife consideres cars an 'appliance', just like some music listeners. And while they buy something, that it plays is more important than other.....qualities. And a FEW of the eccentrics will only listen to live events and may not even own a TV or clock radio.....this is admittedly a VERY tiny number.

Sometimes I don’t give a rats ass so long as the thing plays (any device) Other times I want every nuance on the big system rendered in perfection! Not much of that lately. Anker Bluetooth speaker corner loaded in the kitchen is on while I cook wildly and try not to burn.

Back in the early days of CD.....and I have my original FD1000 from Magnevox (a Philips rebranded), the Cassettes I made from CD made ANY car stereo sound better. Even the Junky system in my Honda. maybe a couple watts total and 4" speakers in the door.
I'm getting better. I made RICE the other day and it came out PERFECT. A dab of butter in the cookpot and thoroughly RINSE the rise before cooking.
