Here's a video just released by Paul McGowan, owner of PS Audio in which he says the quality of the internal wiring in a speaker is important and that most manufacturers ignore this.
You can draw your own conclusions but it does make you wonder why all the fuss about the external cabling and no fuss about what most people never look at. Also, I see he uses Monoprice RCA interconnects. You can see one on his desk while he's talking. Talking about using good wire, I don't use Monoprice RCA's because the plugs are inconsistent. Some are so tight you can barely put them on, and some are too loose. I've also had miswired XLR cables from them so I won't purchase those, either.

I remember years ago the brand Soliloquy promoted that they had Analysis Plus wire in their speakers.. ..
Other than that I can't remember a manufacturer promoting what brand wiring was in their speakers.

This is all poppycock. Internally, the speaker wiring is very short, with a controlled path and connected to a speaker coil (most likely) of even smaller cross sectional area. The external speaker wire is designed for variable installation conditions as to length, to proximity to other wiring, and can have the problem of needing extra shielding to prevent electromagnetic coupling.

I was once on the phone with a driver manufacturer questioning why the test results I was getting were so radically different from what their literature promoted. "You are using single crystalline wire with Teflon insulation, aren't you?" they asked me. That's when I knew the phone call was over.

I was once part of a group discussion regarding the Allison Acoustics IC20 loudspeaker, of which I own a pair. Roy Allison, himself was participating in that discussion. Looking to get a reaction from Him, I brought up the fact that the wire gauge for those woofers was overkill from an electrical standpoint. I knew it was done, simply because the push/pull configuration of the woofers had the rear of one exposed if the grill is removed. His reply was a rather emphatic “Yes Yes”! Bill |

Well phrased.... although I do think their speakers are quite nice  In most situations wire really is just wire. For example, in terms of electrical conductivity, silver is actually better than copper.... by about 5%. So a 14 gauge pure silver speaker cable is 5% better than a 14 gauge copper wire... But a 12 gauge copper wire is a LOT better than a 14 gauge silver wire... And we all know which one costs a LOT more... And, no, they don't otherwise affect electrons in interesting and subtle ways that will make them sound different... (There are a few ways to make a wire that is so wacky that it will have an effect on the sound... but they're all bad... and to be avoided.)
There is some reality to some of it... For example "oxygen free copper wire" is actually better than the kind that doesn't specify that... However the reason is simply that impurities in the copper make it more likely to corrode... So really crappy copper wire may oxidize worse, or sooner, resulting in poor contact with the speaker terminal, and audible distortion... However it's also worth noting that "oxygen free copper" is in fact the current standard for most commercial copper wire... So, for example, the $4.99 of 18 gauge speaker wire at your local hardware store probably is oxygen free copper.
(It's good to have, but it's not a big deal, and you shouldn't be paying extra for it.)
Likewise, gold plating is great to prevent oxidation, so gold plated plugs and connectors are nice... However, again, you shouldn't be paying extra, since only a few cents worth of gold are required. (Gold is expensive but gold plating is very very thin.) On the subject of delusion... Reality is what you can hear when someone HASN'T told you what you should expect to hear. (And when you don't have some preconceived notion that you arrived at all on your own.)

The long runs of 12 gauge needed to hook up my rear speakers came from Home Depot (Carrol Wire). Bill |

I've mentioned this story before but years ago I was helping set up a trade show demo for a friend who was importing Halcro gear from Australia. He wanted his speaker wire to look amazing, so I took the standard 14-AWG zip cord we were using, ran it through 1-inch diameter brightly-colored PVC tubing and used nice shrink-tube boots on the ends to break out the bare wire. He didn't want trade-show audiophools to know he was using standard zip cord as he thought it would harm sales.  |

I missed a punch line here... Which is that fancy speaker wire is often far superior... at transferring money from the pocket of the consumer to that of the manufacturer.
Someone mentioned eye candy... At a trade show some years ago I recall seeing speaker wires that included a spiral of fiber optic around the outside. They actually lit up... looked rather like an audiophile version of a candy cane... and did have the benefit of being very easy to see in the dark.
(I think they actually carried sound as well... although I forgot to ask if they lit in different colors for different types of music.)
