The Vinyl resurrection- been there, done that. I had TT from Thorens to Techniques to Pioneer, bunches to cartridges in the day. My intension is to play our old LPs only. Picked up Fluance RT82 with the Ortofon OM 10 cartridge that doesn't impress me at all (meh) kinda lifeless. At the time my thoughts were to upgrade cartridge with something from my old stock of cartridges. There are 3 I still have that I remember liking- ADC LM III, Empire ID50 & Shure M91E after selling the other higher quality cartridges. (in the process of mounting all on shells to test) The M91E seemed (from memory) to be close to V15 III or IV I had & lost, but needs a stylus- bent cantilever. Jaco replacement is cost prohibitive @ $134, I'd rather have a new cartridge. Reviews from young beginners to old-timers of other after market stylus are nuts, can't get a consensus. Some after-market brands are good for one cartridge brand, not for others, etc, etc. EVG, Pfanstiehl, KYOWA, LP Gear. Who makes a good, inexpensive Shure replacement stylus?

Replace the stylus in the Ortofon OM10 with the LP Gear Shibata stylus for Ortofon OM 40. $200 and you will have a cartridge that sounds better than the Ortofon 2M Black.

Jackfish, that's a pretty bold statement. I have read the OM 10 can be upgraded with noticeable improvement with OM 20, 30 & 40 stylus. The OM 30 upgrade is $179, so $20 more is there if I want it. I did see your comment on Vinylengine.

For me, the 2m black was awful, even after tinkering.
Get a Dynavector 20x2l, only $1,100.

I have no personal experience with it but it’s been high on my list for some time. That said Bill, you may want to revisit his original post. It leaves me thinking that he’s not wanting to spend that amount for what he has invested already. He simply wants to revisit the collection of LPs he already owns. This purchase would only be practical if his intentions were to expand his collection. Just my hunch sir. Niw I think I’ll warm up my tubes and TT. New LP to listen to.

I have no experience with that particular cartridge, but the results tell me a patient buyer that knows his stuff will get one there without having to wait too long. (Stylus) Bill

You're correct Nick, vinyl is no longer my thing. Just want M91E stylus that's better than the OM10, I have other cartridges that also play better. Most of our favorite LP albums are now digitized on the server, some LPs aren't worth purchasing again, but when the glasses get refilled... ya never know what comes to mind. We have one 48" shelf of LPs, not counting the boxes left in my sister's basement from my parents house. When I lived in Atlanta, I met a local DJ. He had one room (11x12?) with 3 walls, floor to 8' ceiling of LPs. In the middle was more boxes of R to R tapes, a loveseat & a 2ch system: JBL L4411 , Thorens, Teac & integrated amp. "Hey, whatcha got to listen to?! lol"

Thanks Bill, I've been on eBay, thus my question about the quality of suppliers. I came to the conclusion the M91E won't return to it's former self, unless I spend $100. Found some $42-64 but don't know their quality. I got a pm from a women who offered a price drop on her higher end stylus substitute, but doesn't quite equal Shure or JICO. Maybe.

You could try LP Gear for a replacement stylus. Have you checked your preamp phono switches? Most have impedance selector switches to match the cartridge you are using as well as MM vs MC. Often older stylus have hardening of the rubber mount/suspension around the needle and will no longer be able to move in the groove correctly. You can see the rubber in the attached pic. There is a solvent you can use a drop of that will soften the rubber; but which solvent escapes me at the moment.

Sounds like you’re in a good position to wait out a good deal with the right seller for OEM. I would maintain a “saved search” for an OEM at the right price….could take months or one could pop up tomorrow. I collected a priceless stash of vintage drivers by doing that with a sea of “ junk” in between. Bill
