realize that on any EQ the center band frequncy is just that: the center of the band. The adjustment occurs over a broad range above and below the center frequency. The Q factor determines how broad is the adjustment. I believe Jason Stoddard said the Q of Loki Mini is 1, which means the adjustment envelope is about 1.33 octaves to either side of the center. So the 8Khz band will actually effect from about 4Khz to about 16Khz.

DYohn I am now considering a comparision with other headphones to see which one fits. The Aeon seemed to get some good measurements. You seem to be familiar with this company. How do you think the Aeon compares to the Ether C Flow and the hd800s? I specifically want an expansive soundstage like the hd800s but also the bass extension. Also has anybody had any experience with the Hifiman Arya? I heard the sound is really nice with good bass but I'm wary of the build quality. I'm not gentle on headphones and use them for many hours at a time.

I have never listened to the Aeon. I have heard the Ether open backs and they were better than the HD650 I compared them to, in my opinion. I have not heard the 800 but can recommend the Ether for superb frequency response. But like I said, never heard Aeon.

Do you feel the soundstage of the ether is substantially larger in size? As in not all inside your head but feels like it expands around your head? That's something I had a problem with the HD600 and HD6xx (similar to the 650) is that the sound was clearly coming from next to my ears rather than giving me a more spacious presentation like what I'm getting from the HD700 and HD800.

You need to reduce the clamping force. Everything else looks fine I tried that and my dentures fell out. I need to revoke your audiophile card. Teeth are not required for listening

"Soundstage" is really such a subjective thing that I refuse to comment on it. How you hear this psychoacoustic phenomena and how I do will be completely different, especially with headphones.

I agree what you mean about for people things like that will be diffferent. But maybe you'd be willing to talk about headspace? Does that make any sense?

I know what you are getting at and it's still in the subjective realm. I will say this: I preferred the Dan Clark Audio Ether to my HD650, and I greatly preferred the Voce to Ether (but it represents a significantly higher overall investment.) This had to do with bass extension, openness, midrange clarity, and dynamics. If I was buying a dynamic headphone today I would not hesitate to try one of DCA's planer sets, or perhaps one from Focal. I do not personally like the overall sound character of Grado or Audeze headphones (and they are very different from each other) and I think the Bayer Dynamics higher-end sets sound nice but a bit uncomfortable. YMMV.

And by the way, my favorite sounding Sennheiser headphones are the HD580 Precisions that I own. The 650 was great but I like the 580 more so that's the one I kept. I listened to the 800 (not the S) in a store a while back but was not impressed.

Unlike you, however, the 800's are my favorite of all the ones I've owned. I have always liked Sennheiser, starting from the 424's I bought back in the 70's.

Well some more time has passed "breaking" these in. Now they are starting to sound startlingly good. The bass is more present and close to being at the HD700 level. However, the treble glare is still present though somewhat reduced. The obvious impressive part is the soundstage positioning. The scale is bigger than the HD700. It's not as "out of my head" as I had hoped. But it is more out of my head than the HD700. When movement in the sound happens, it's a lot more obvious. I did a recording on stereo recordings of me playing an instrument and purposefully moving to different positions of the "soundstage". The HD800s were a lot more obvious that I got closer and farther, and when I panned back and forth. At this point, I feel that these headphones were not a mistake. I'm just going to give it a bit more time and see where it takes me. I'm seeing many signs of "greatness" but also some signs that I don't care for it. Other than the treble glare, the headphones are really large. I sit with a neck pillow and it feels a little awkward the way it doesn't clamp on my head and a little painful due to the weight. A guy on Audiosciencereview built an all analog eq designed for headphones. They come with modules that can be activated. They have a HD800S module which bumps up the bass and lowers the treble peaks. Which sounds more or less exactly what I want it to sound like so I am probably going to order it!

These days I cringe when “that word” is used as a descriptive audio term. “Soundstage” IS what it is…..and it’s where you go for it.
