I've had a few Emotiva (and Sherbourn) processors over the years. I am debating on trying something newer from Emotiva or the Denon I mentioned or possibly a Marantz. I started with an LMC-1, moved on to a UMC-1, then a PT-7020, and now a a PT-7030. I had intended to use my 40% processor upgrade but sometimes plans take a lot longer to come to fruition than I'd hoped. I like Emotiva gear whiich is why I am conflicted on this. It seems each processor has had its quirks. I can deal with them but I must admit my wife does not care for the quirkiness. I don't think an XMC-2 is within my budget at this point so, that would mean I'd wait for an XMC-1 trade-in.
Has anyone done a direct comparison between a decent quality receiver and the XMC-1? If so, how much sound quality would I be giving up?
I would be pairing this with a PA7-350 and a first generation XPA-5.
Thank you for any insight you can provide!

Marantz 8801 that I had for a few days, then ordered a UMC-200 and it handily bested the Marantz, then later that year I got the XMC-1 when it was first available and things got even better.

It looks like you've moved on to the XMC-2. Did you have any issues with the XMC-1 while you had it? Thank again!

The XMC-1 had quirks along the way, but nothing so different from the Pioneer Elite that preceded the UMC-200, or the Denon before that. The quirks the XMC-1 had were minor and never got in the way of being able to use it for listening to music or watching movies. The Pioneer would just stop, freeze, lockup, and need the power cord disconnected for several minutes. I gave it to a friend who uses it to this day, and it still freezes. The Denon wouldn't always respond to remote commands so I'd have to use the buttons on the front panel. The Pioneer and Denon were not near as complex as the XMC-1, but they were definitely not problem free.
One issue with the XMC-1 was when I switched from using a Windows computer to a Mac and needing to figure out how to get Dirac to check-in with the servers. Turned out to be a firewall issue on the Mac.
But, no fails in 5+ years for my XMC-1.
Full disclosure, my XMC-2 had to go back to Emotiva for a re-flash of the HDMI board, my Krell amp has been repaired twice under its 5 year warranty, my Sony X700 can't get through a 3 hour HDR movie without a fan blowing air on it and it was on top of the cabinet . . . . Nuthin' is perfect.

My XMC-1 has performed flawlessly, but I have not upgraded to the 4K HDMI board. I’m kinda afraid to upset the current setup since it works so well.

I had my XMC-1 for five years prior to upgrading to the XMC-2. It worked great and also well after I upgraded to the 4K HDMI board. Installed the board myself. There were a few quirks along the way as ttocs has mentioned, but those were solved via firmware update. It was a very nice unit.
Currently enjoying my XMC-2 and have no regrets.

Thank you all for your help. I may try another Emotiva processor. I would say the LMC-1 was the most stable of the ones I've had but it was admittedly far less complex. My UMC-1 had occasional HDMI issues. The PT-7020 does not always default to the correct audio and I would have to toggle thru the setting and manually select it. The PT-7030 had a color issue when using component for video and I had to send it back for repair/calibration. As ttocs said, even big brand receivers are not immune to having issues as processors are getting more and more complex.

Get a Denon or Marantz heck anything that you won't have to get in "Fox viewing position" for it to work reliably. If you really want to to scratch that itch and get another Emo processor please read all of the negative posts. The frustration just couldn't out way any improvement in audio quality. I'd be embarrassed to have it in my theater, or family room. Ultimately it's your money and your decision, just make the best choice for you and your family.

I still have Emotiva XMC-1 with a 4K board and works flawless with version 5.15. No issues or bugs at all.
