I have a problem with REW, my laptop and RMC-1. When I connect my laptop to RMC-1 I get a picture instantly. No problem there. Start REW, choose soundcard, but RMC-1 is not there, my Sony TV is however. When I use this I can’t choose output speakers at all. L/R is but nothing more. If I disconnect both the TV and my vertex2 (which then goes to my projector) I get RMC-1 in the list. I set it up and can choose up to 7.1 as I should. The problem is I don’t get sound most of the times. Sometimes I have gotten it to measure my sub, then a minute later I can’t get any sound from it, this without changing any settings in REW. Am I doing something wrong? Is there some things I need to do to setup REW for Emotiva for this to work? Are you using Mac or PC?

Ok. There will be some differences in how Mac and PC operate. My Mac used to show my Sony TV as the audio output device, but now shows XMC-2. Haven't checked this in a long time so I don't know when or what changed this. On a Mac, it's the Audio MIDI Setup app that controls how Inputs/Outputs are setup, including channel setup for 7.1 etc. So I am not able to help with any of this on a PC. When I've gotten a sound/no sound situation, I've had to reboot REW, or, my Mac, or, reboot everything including the processor. It's hit and miss, but it's usually REW that needs a reboot when anything changes with audio, and if that doesn't work then rebooting the computer will usually get things working again. Also, something to note. REW can often revert back to its default for Output Device in Preferences which will then choose Default for the Output Device. So I then need to change this back to HDMI to get all the channels working.

I find my RMC-1 (through SONY TV in name) and can set it up with 7.1 channels. Still get no sound from REW! I have reinstalled it, changed settings, restarted, rechecked settings. Nothing seem to work.. It’s really strange because if I start Youtube I have no problem getting sound from any video.

You might be able to get an idea of what's wrong by looking at the resources in the thread. Marc shows a bit about setup with a PC, whereas I use Mac.

hsamwel which version of REW are you using? Some are having issues with the latest beta. Also, look at your ASIO setup on the PC.

However, I might try ASIO as something seems wrong with the Java implementation. Or how Emotiva reports itself in the HDMI chain. Because I always get the display device in REW not RMC-1. Unless I disconnect both displays. I shouldn’t have to disconnect the displays should I? How do you get the output device name when using Java? Can you get sound from it? I think the version is the latest stable. 5.20.13 or something. I can’t see as I’m not on my laptop writing this. But I’m pretty sure, because I did a search for a new version inside REW yesterday and it said I already had the latest version.

Apparently you can only have 16bit sound through Java with REW in Windows. If this is an issue I don’t know?! Although it supports sample rates up to 192khz. I have it set at 48khz.
How would I go about checking this? Can I even force 16bit for REW? I thought it set that up itself.
Windows supports much higher bitrates. But I haven’t seen any settings where you would set this for a output? Not in REW either.

I don't know the exact details about how each version of Windows decides what to display... but... There are several ways in which the source can "collect" information about the devices downstream from it. And many of them aren't much more than a "device name" entered into a data field somewhere. And the ASIO driver is different than the basic Windows sound system drivers... and JAVA adds yet another layer of software... So it's not surprising that a program like REW may "see" and report different details depending on how it's accessing the hardware. (And this may or may not tell you much about which devices it is actually capable of interacting with.) It's also worth mentioning that ASIO4ALL is really a sort of "ASIO emulator" (as compared to a normal ASIO driver)... So it too can have some quirks, and be fussy about some options, on some hardware... hsamwel which version of REW are you using? Some are having issues with the latest beta. I wouldn't worry about any "limitations" of 48k or 16 bits... After all, you're "just playing audio frequency test tones at average playback levels"... However, since you're going through several different layers of software, it's important that you choose settings that they all support. And don't forget that you're also supporting the processor as your "playback device" and your microphone as your "recording device". (Some microphones and drivers can also be picky about the sample rates you use.) Apparently you can only have 16bit sound through Java with REW in Windows. If this is an issue I don’t know?! Quote/ On Windows platforms there is a choice of Java or ASIO drivers for the audio interface. The Java drivers support 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96 and 192 kHz sample rates and 16-bit data. On macOS and Linux 32-bit or 24-bit data is used if the interface offers it. Java drivers permit the input and output to be on different devices and allow volume control from REW. The ASIO drivers support up to 1536 kHz and a variety of formats depending on the driver. ASIO drivers support one ASIO device which must be used for both input and output and REW has no control over levels. Pseudo-ASIO drivers such as ASIO4All create an ASIO wrapper around the WDM drivers for devices, allowing input and output through different devices. /End quote www.roomeqwizard.com/help/help_en-GB/html/soundcard.htmlNot that it matters really which format I use. I was thinking if java (REW) somehow got the wrong sound setting and thus wouldn’t play anything. It actually tries to play without any error messages, just that RMC-1 does not get any sound.

What I asked about was if the 16bit limitation in the java implementation of REW somehow gives me problems with getting any output. I did set REW to 48khz. Which I suppose shouldn’t give any problems with either Windows, REW, RMC-1 or my UMIK-1. According other forums and help on REW home page I can’t see anything wrong with my settings. Atleast not in REW. That’s why I asked about the sound formats. I have no issues playing any other sounds from my laptop to RMC-1, just from REW. My guess is this is a really simple ”wrong settings” somewhere that could fix this. If Windows directly gets audio out then REW on Windows sure should also..

Note that, if you use a pseudo-ASIO wrapper like ASIO4ALL... then you will have a whole separate configuration screen for THAT as well. (We use ASIO4ALL here for a few things and, while it works quite well, it does have a few interesting quirks, and does sometimes need the occasional restart.) hsamwel which version of REW are you using? Or it fails to see my audio device, etc. Select, deselect, reselect devices, reload ASIO4ALL, restart REW, etc. ... happens occasionally, but as I said it's more stable with V2.

It seems behave just the same with the Java. Maybe a little bit better stability according to some. But until lately it just supported 2ch. But in my setup I can’t get sound from it. In multi channel mode anyway. I got measurements from my sub in one setting. But I can’t tell what it measured. LFE or BM subwoofer?! I have never got any sound from my front speakers though, strangely. Anyway, I downloaded ASIO4ALL v2.15 which seemed to be the latest version. The installation went fine and ASIO4ALL is found in REW. Is there anything else that’s needed to get it to measure? I already have UMIK-1 connected and the calibration file set up in REW. I will try it out later this week. Work takes up a lot of my time now..

v2.15 of ASIO4ALL is listed as the "latest final version"... JAVA is interesting... It is intended to be a sort of universal programming language (in theory a JAVA program will run on any platform that supports JAVA - so "you only have to write it once")... Unfortunately, as with any "one size fits all" type solution, the result isn't always quite as seamless as intended... Note that JAVA has been around for a long time, and has gotten pretty darn good, but it still adds extra steps when you're trying to talk directly to hardware several levels below it. (For example, when you run JAVA on a Windows machine, it still has to talk to physical devices through Windows, which adds another layer of things that need to work seamlessly together.) V2 doesn't crash as often with REW but it does sometimes. Or it fails to see my audio device, etc. Select, deselect, reselect devices, reload ASIO4ALL, restart REW, etc. ... happens occasionally, but as I said it's more stable with V2. I have now installed ASIO4ALL. It seems to work fine.
First I could get any sound at all. After a few tries I got an error in the ASIO control panel for my HDMI audio output. It seemed to complain about the driver being too old or too new. Gave me a few suggestion about turning off other outputs. I also turned on support for 7.1 for my HDMI audio. I did a reboot. This time it didn’t complain.
I get 8 speakers in the list, ACX HD Audio Speaker 1 to 8. In ASIO control panel it says the output supports 8x 48khz 16bits audio. However, no sound from speakers 3 to 8. Only from front L/R. Also there’s distortion coming from it when REW sends out the measuring signal. This from both left and right speaker.
Can I change output? I saw Marc used JRiver..

If it's not set up like that then it will only play stereo ... L/R are channels 1 and 2 from REW.
