CD steamer? Do they make a larger version for LP's? That's obsolete. Exactly! Streamers are disposable items. New service or formats come out to cover every business cycle. OEMs have to eat. Now a killer standalone DAC lasts a much longer time.

Okay I assume Streamer. I think Emotiva has been down this road before. I don't know what has changed since their last view of this. With things like the Raspberry Pis and so on, I know Emotiva could probably create some integration and packaging for its product whether stand alone or in another product. Question is will it be profitable and reasonable for their business vision. Streamers are a divided camp of extremely expensive or not. Also the support that you asking about will have to be figured into the equation as well. Raspberry Pis are about the easiest, no thought, option for streaming out there. I use one running Volumio to stream my music files to my 2-channel system/headphone rig. I also use one to run my Plex server that allows me to stream Tidal and my music/video collection anywhere I have a wifi connection as well as any smart device hooked up to my home network.

Yes it was made for this purpose and does very well. Which again begs the question, why would Emotiva need to involve themselves with this.

I wonder what percent of the likely customers COULD set up a PI in the right/best configuration. Then I wonder what percent of the likely customers WOULD do it. I think I could, but running the Squeezebox Touch sure is easy. A PI with a touch screen and jRiver would sure be a fun item to try. Pretty sure I could not do that one.

I will like to buy a streamer in the $500 range for casual listening. Must have airplay and coax out. It would be nice if has aes/ebu digital out as well. Right now Im contemplating getting the iFi streamer currently at $400. No xlr out tough.

I run the Streamer USB out into a hub to three different USB DACs.

(AES/EBU XLR) That streamer is digital only so it would feed your DAC and that could have analog XLR out.

Bluesound Node is still hard to beat. Maybe what is wanted by 'some' is an all-in-one Preamp, dac, power amp, Dirac & Volumio. Here it is- www.minidsp.com/products/streaming-hd-series/shd-power ($1550). There is one that only lacks a amp- www.minidsp.com/products/streaming-hd-series/shd-series. ($1250) Each have all the in, outs one would need/want. The only reason there is not one in my system is Dirac built into the XMC and it has usb input (and I like Burr-Brown DACs). A Stream-Pi, raspberry Pi is cheap (NUC are a bit more $ but more powerful) tons of software addons, an old pc with Vortexbox or Volunio server software plus addons and you're at or under $500.

While I could set up a RPi I'm not sure I want to bother as I really don't have the time to tinker. I would be interested in a reasonably priced RPi with a touchscreen and Volumio, or an alternate practical solution.

I really like the ifi Zen Streamer, but I use it mainly for listening to Tidal Master MQA through either a ifi Zen Dac V2 or a Topping D90SE (both are USB Dacs. I have connected the D90SE to the Zen Streamer coax and it delivers hi rez (even hi rez MQA). I had been enamored with the Arylic S50 Pro until I discovered that its SPDIF output was limited to 44khz cd resolution even though it decoded up to 192khz for its own internal Saber dac (which sounds pretty good by the way). That one is only $219, so the cost is low.

Download the kernel from their website to an SD card, plug it in to the RPi and Bob's your uncle. A touchscreen would be nice, but you can also control it from your phone or as a headless server. Adding tunes is as easy as pulling the media from the USB and adding to it. Volumio automatically recognizes you've added files and incorporates them. Plex, on the other hand, took me a few hours to get it to work right and required a little problem solving to get things to work just right. Similar to Volumio, just add your files and Plex will update itself. If you don't like the metadata it imports, you can change it the way you like.

Adding tunes is as easy as pulling the media from the USB and adding to it. Having done this myself, here's my version: 1) Buy the parts & if needed assemble (you can buy the board and the case and assemble them yourself OR some places sell the board already in a case! AND with the appropriate software already installed!!!) If you assemble, it's as easy as an old snap-together model kit (put board into case, put top on case, done...) 2) Download Volumio from their site onto a microSD card (or use an option like DietPi...just a different operating system for the Pi that can also use Roon for those, like me, who like Roon). 3) Put the microSD card into the Pi 4) If you want to control it with your phone, download the Volumio app onto your phone. Or, you can use a tablet or laptop or desktop...same thing, download the control software. I personally prefer Roon, but Volumio is good also. 4) Power up the Pi and start playing music. (You can get really fancy by telling Volumio where you have a networked shared drive and pull ripped CD's from that or link in various streaming sources like Spotify. Volumio is pretty easy to that, as is Roon.) Mark (PS - I am also a Boomer and I figured it out!)

Here was my server, streamer & Sony M555ES Mega 400 CD changer controller: only $3000 retail, now WORTHLESS because D&M stopped updates and shut down the proxy server. If your HDD dies, you're s.o.l. can't re-install the OS without the proxy server.
