Chatted via email with Arendal today and discussed the options and the decision has been made... 1961 series all around!! Needless to say, my credit card will be hurting for a while... - 1961 Towers
- 1961 Center
- 1961 Surrounds (x2)
- 1961 Heights
- 1961 1v Sub
1961... didn't they have a more recent model? Just kidding! At least they are the newer models, the originals were designed in 1723... almost 240 years between models, crazy right!! In a recent Audioholics interview, Jan from Arendal provided the following back story to the model numbers; I found it interesting that they tied historical events into their product lines: - The town of Arendal was given "kjøpstad" privileges on May 1, 1723, giving it full "town status" along with all the trading privileges as other towns.
- In 1961, a bridge was built between a small island and the mainland; he provided the analogy of bridging the gap between high end sound and the average consumer.
Below is additional information about the bridge and the 1961 line: arendalsound.com/new-1961-series/

I'm looking forward to hearing these speakers in my room as the Marantz has a warmer sound than the Schiit audio gear with my EVO 4.4s, so I'm thinking that slight edginess will simply be a "bad memory"; if not, I'm pretty sure I can tweak it with room correction.

Quick update on the 1961 1v sub... thus far, I'm extremely happy with the way it's handling the low end; it goes deep, yet its quick and tight. Not sure if I'll need a second one, but only time will tell. You can find more info on the subwoofer by Clicking Here

Interesting opinion... the 1961 monitor vs tower. I haven't placed my order yet as I'm traveling for work and didn't want to leave the task of bringing in various boxes to my wife and kids. Do I need to rethink my options? Second guessing myself? Hmm... what to do?

If you haven’t looked at the “Outlet” area on the Arendal site, I’d give that a look. If you’re second guessing towers for monitors or bookshelfs with a subwoofer(s), I think this would be worth a look. arendalsound.com/store/outlet-items/

As you know, I had the 1723s towers and after an in home demo, for 2 channel only, I returned them as I didn't want to introduce DSP nor other form of processing to tame their slight edginess. They did look rather big in the room, so my initial thought process was to give the 1961s a go for HT as they are smaller and should in theory, be a better fit... similar voicing, more than likely not as dynamic due to the smaller drivers. When I recently contacted Arendal, I didn't indicate that I previously auditioned the 1723s and asked for a recommendation between the 1961 and 1723s; via email and within their forum, two difference representatives recommended the 1961s due to the size of my room; aesthetic reasons, more separation between LCR, so better soundstage. I'm not kicking the 1961s to the curb based on one review, Erin's review was very positive, simply weighing options... I'm probably overthinking it...

To be fair, this review wasn’t a bad review from Andrew, but a pointed comment from his wife. I tend to have listened to Erin’s Audio Corner and James Larsen on Audioholics to a much greater degree. Audioholics YouTube channel is having a Live Event this coming Tuesday, 11/15/2022 @2:00EST with Arendal Sounds product designer, I think his name is Thomas, so you may want to try and catch that or watch it after the fact.

Just got back from a 3 day business trip and a recently purchased Apple TV 4k was waiting for me. After 10mins or so to setup, connect apps and update the OS, the Apple TV is up and running. I'll compare it to my Nvidia Shield over the next few days, but thus far, it seems quicker to navigate and open apps than the 3+ year old Shield.

Was delaying the purchase of a new Blu-ray player and my waiting just paid off, the Panasonic 820 was on sale at BestBuy for $399; having $50 in BestBuy rewards made the deal even better.

Miscellaneous supplies for the HT build are arriving.... 200ft of Amazon Basics 14awg inwall speaker cable. I've had good experience with their HDMI cables, so I'm giving this spool from Amazon a try. Instead of a having a bunch of white cables from the surround / heights channels coming out of the wall, I purchased 50ft of this flex cover to cover what's visible; I already have black shrink wrap and banana plugs from a different project.

Exactly, can't wait and yes, we're having family over... we'll see what time FedEx plans to arrive as that will dictate if I'll have an empty stomach or a full one while unboxing them.
