Interesting, thorough, and helpful review. I’ve been interested in the Triton Reference as a speaker that might allow me to blend my two channel and home theatre systems (essentially eliminating a dedicated two channel). I just looked again at their website, do you know why the 3+ is the only speaker listed as discontinued? When I first read your review I thought they might be replacing all of the Sandy Gross designs, and with many of the others on significant discount, they might be?
Did supplying power to the speakers present any unique challenges? I don’t supposed as stereo speakers you tested the line level LFE input? (I wish this was balanced on the larger models). They are unique speakers and I expect they will present unique challenges; I do have a local dealer, and I’ve listened to the Reference, but I’d like to know more about where the company is going ‘post Gross’. I have until the end of ski season to think more seriously about this, and explore the WAF of eliminating the Maggies (she loves), and trying something new (maybe). Thanks for the review.

GoldenEar was a manufacturer I seriously considered before choosing my current speakers. They sound really nice and build quality is really good. My concern in my situation was the speaker placement, which is why I have in the past chosen to stay away from similar integrated speaker designs and continue to use stand-alone subwoofers.

I don't know about the rest of the Triton products. I seriously doubt that they're changing the entire line all at once, though. GoldenEar wasn't terribly forthcoming about their plans for future upgrades. If I had to guess, I'd say that it'll probably be some few years until GoldenEar gets around to replacing all the Triton line, but my guess and a buck will get you a cup of McCoffee (with the senior discount). Did supplying power to the speakers present any unique challenges? I don’t supposed as stereo speakers you tested the line level LFE input? (I wish this was balanced on the larger models). Power to the speakers didn't seem to be picky. Whether plugged into the same power strip as the rest of the equipment or plugged into independent wall sockets, I never had any ground loop or hum issues. This has NOT been the case with some other equipment, so I'd give the Tritons a gold star for ground isolation. Since I didn't have an AVR or processor on hand, no, I didn't test the LFE input. Maybe next time... I will say that the GoldenEar Triton line comes closer to an "all in one" speaker solution than anything else I've encountered. The Tritons can eliminate the need for discreet subwoofers. The Tritons can keep up with the volume demands of movies. The Tritons are delicate enough for music, even at lower volumes. And perhaps most importantly, having onboard self-amplified bass gives the speakers placement flexibility beyond any other speaker I've heard. Glenn

My concern in my situation was the speaker placement, which is why I have in the past chosen to stay away from similar integrated speaker designs and continue to use stand-alone subwoofers. MY experience with the GoldenEars is that the self-amplified bass volume control is well enough integrated such that you can turn up (or down) the bass without significantly impacting the crossover region. I started with the speakers near the wall behind them for bass reinforcement, but imaging suffered. I then brought them out into the room far enough for "near-field" listening, and found that I could restore the bass balance with the onboard amplifiers just fine! In fact, you can overdo the bass even with the speakers in the middle of the room if you aren't careful. I've not heard any other speakers that I can remember with self-amplified bass, but I think that GoldenEar got it just right! The bass, by the way, is not just simple slope modification. The internal amp has its own DSP to shape the bass to match the top end as the amplitude changes. It isn't "room aware," so if you want to room correct, you'll need to apply it externally, but I find the results of the self-amplified bass to be extremely musical regardless of the bass amplitude relative to the passive top end. The problem with, say, more than a few feet, is if your room is a multipurpose room with frequent foot traffic then it just isn’t realistic for speaker placement. If you have a dedicated room for listening then speaker placement isn’t a problem, if not then speakers with minimal boundary problems for placement are ones options. I don’t doubt they sound great though.

The fronts of my speakers are (currently) about 24 to 30 inches from the wall behind them. My room IS a multi-purpose room, so to achieve "near field" listening, I use a folding chair. I bring the chair to almost the middle of the room and listen from there. Another way that I considered to provide speaker placement flexibility was to install casters on the bottom of the plates. Then I could roll the speakers to wherever I wanted them for listening sessions & roll them back against the wall for storage. But the success of their current placement has got the caster option on hold. garbulky dropped by the other evening to hear the GoldenEars, and I'm hoping he'll post his impressions soon.

Hey Boom I would love to see if you could get a pair of Buchardt A700 for review. A powered speaker with simplicity and flexibility and great sound.

Closer to my daughter & son in law. They live in Massachusetts near M.I.T. We don't necessarily need to live in Mass. but want to be close (maybe via commuter train?). Never having lived in those latitudes, we may well rent for a year or two to see if we can stand the Winters. If not, then we'll become "Snowbirds," living up there in the Summer and in the South during the Winter.

I wish you the best of luck on your move and hoping you acclimate to the frozen north. I grew up in MN, but have lived in FL for the last 20 years. I can’t imagine going back BRRR Though I’ve noticed people raised in the south enjoy the change when moving north. While those of us from the north seem to enjoy the change we experience in the south.
