Yea... the MoveIT issue is indeed massive and unfortunately becoming more commonplace.

I got a new perspective on the Louisiana Department of Motor Vehicles data hack last night from the coordinator of LSU data services. He says that data loss made me MORE secure! Why?
1. The data stolen was almost all available online already. How? Data aggregators work 24/7 to collect this data and the little added from this particular breach is a drop in the bucket.
2. Like the crowd of natives running from the lion, you don't have to be faster than the lion - you only have to be faster than the next guy. Since I already have two-factor authentication on all financial accounts and a credit lock to prevent fraudulent new accounts from being opened, I'm not the slowest native.
3. Having such a massive amount of data available works for me by making my particular data set a "needle in a haystack." The hackers now have millions of potential victims to attack; they may not get around to me for years.
Of course, number two is the most significant factoid in this bunch (and the reason that he claims that the data breach has made me "more secure"). He's also suggested that availing myself of the free year of Norton Security offered by the LA DMV is not necessary - it's an attempt to lock the barn door after the cows have already escaped.
Despite the folksy similes and metaphors, I think now that he may be right.
